Approach to learning and assessment

The program uses a combination of studio-based delivery models and standard academic classroom practice (lectures and tutorial), mixed with group presentation sessions, and industry participation at various stages of the study program.

Briefs are structured in the way professional briefs would be in industry and many of these are opportunities to work on industry-based briefs and or in association with industry. As designers rarely work alone on projects there is a strong emphasis on group work and group presentations. Internal electives allow you to specialise in key areas of industry practice.

As the studio based delivery model reflects professional practice expectations you are expected to participate actively in the studio classes. This may take the form of discussion, brainstorming, critiquing, presentations or peer reviews.

All courses are supported by MyRMIT, RMIT’s Online Learning System, and are supplemented with readings and some key textbooks.

Assessment activities are outlined in each brief students receive and the assessment criteria are clearly outlined for satisfactory performance in assessment, with feedback given to help you understand how your learning is progressing against the learning objectives. 

Provision is made to assist students with special needs and the appropriate response to each student is assessed on a case-by-case basis in consultation with RMIT’s Equitable Learning Services.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will: 

• undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
• interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
• complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;
• these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning

In this program, you will be doing specific courses that focus on work integrated learning (WIL). You will be assessed on professional or vocational work in a workplace setting (real or simulated) and receive feedback from those involved in your industry. The WIL course in this program is:

•  GRAP2643 Studio 3 Communication Design (24cp)

This course includes a work-integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in project-based learning, where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience. In this course, you will gain experience in professional communication design practices and processes by working on real-world briefs.

 Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated.
