Approach to learning and assessment

The program combines studio-based learning with lectures and tutorials, including group presentations. Studio activities, reflecting professional practice, may include discussion, brainstorming, critiquing and peer reviews. It is important for you to engage in the studio learning environment as you respond to the briefs provided, which may include industry-based briefs or interaction with industry. As designers rarely work alone on projects there is a strong emphasis on group work and group presentations.

As part of your learning experience you will have the opportunity to undertake a study tour to RMIT Melbourne where you will experience design in a different cultural context supported by RMIT Melbourne academics.

Assessment activities are outlined in every brief, including the assessment criteria. Feedback will be provided to help you track how your learning is progressing against the specified learning outcomes and capabilities for each course, with strengths highlighted and recommendations given on areas for improvement. You will also be given opportunities to provide feedback on the course, which will support us in continuous improvement.

All courses are supported by online learning tools and content for your program and associated courses which may be accessed from the student portal, myRMIT

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience.  As a student enrolled in an RMIT program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on a structured activity that allows you to learn, apply and  demonstrate your professional or vocational practice
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking this activity
  • complete an activity in a work context or situation that may include teamwork with other students from different disciplines.
  • underpin your learning with feedback from interactions and contexts distinctive to workplace experiences

In this program, you will be doing specific courses that focus on work integrated learning (WIL). You will be assessed on professional or vocational work in a workplace setting (real or simulated) and receive feedback from those involved in your industry. The WIL course in this program is:

  • GRAP2644 Studio 3 Communication Design (24cp)

This course includes a work-integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in project-based learning, where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience. In this course, you will gain experience in professional communication design practices and processes by working on real-world briefs.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated.
