Top of pagePurpose of the Program
The Bachelor of Business (Economics and Finance) (Applied) will provide you with the knowledge and skills required in the financial management of public and private enterprises through curriculum involving highly-focussed and in-depth theoretical and practical learning and professional training in economics and finance, combined with generalist business studies in statistics, accounting, marketing, management, and business IT.
The program is delivered on-campus through face-to-face teaching and learning, with some online components. You will be engaged in a variety of learning experiences, including lectures and tutorials, individual assignments, collaborative team-based projects, presentations, and activities using the Financial Markets Training Simulator. Assessments will include formal examinations, written assignments, presentations, case studies, projects, and in-class tests.
The theory covered in this program is applied in two practical components. Firstly, through a supervised work placement supporting the development and application of skills valued by employers that increase your awareness of business practice, and, secondly, through two Work Integrated Learning (WIL) courses. Together these will provide the practical experience in industry and professional engagement necessary for you to acquire and apply knowledge in workplace contexts, enhancing development of your employability skills and assisting in your transition from student to professional.
This program provides opportunities to apply and consolidate your knowledge and skills in a practical workplace setting during the third year of the program. Upon completion of your practical placement, you will employ the tools and experiences gained to innovate, design and solve business-related problems in tow business design project courses.
The final year of the program includes the capstone courses BAFI1018 International Finance, BUSM4371 Economics and Finance Business Design Project 1, and BUSM4372 Economics and Finance Business Design Project 2 which will provide you the opportunity to critically reflect on, consolidate and apply the theoretical approaches and work-practice experiences gained throughout the program in discipline related real-world scenarios, providing you with the skills and attributes necessary for work-readiness in your chosen career field or to progress successfully to further studies at the post graduate level.
This program will prepare you to work in a globalised, international context as a professional economist, analyst, researcher, trader, or financier in the banking, stockbroking, funds management, insurance and superannuation industries and in other private sector or government organisations requiring high level, technical expertise in financial and economic analysis, or for post-graduate studies and possible employment in tertiary education and academia.

Credit and exemptions will be assessed consistent with the principles of the RMIT University Credit Policy. Applicants who have completed studies or have partially completed a similar program at another institution (with entry criteria similar to this program) may be accepted with some credits or exemptions being granted towards this program.

Semester 2, 2021 is the final intake for BP134 Bachelor of Business (Economics and Finance) (Applied).
Applicants with recent secondary education (current and within the past two years):
Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent. If applicable, this includes equity access schemes and any other adjustment factors.
Vocational Education and Training study applicants:
Successful completion of an Australian Diploma or Advanced Diploma or equivalent overseas qualification.
Higher Education Diploma applicants:
Successful completion of an Australian Higher Education Diploma or equivalent overseas qualification with a cumulative GPA of 2.0 out of 4.0 / 60% Weighted Average Mark (WAM).
Associate Degree applicants:
Domestic applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of four courses in an Australian Associate Degree with GPA converted to ATAR and no double-fail in any required course of the receiving degree.
International applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of an Australian Associate Degree.
All Bachelor Degree applicants:
Domestic applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of two courses in an Australian Bachelor Degree with GPA converted to ATAR and no double-fail in any required course of the receiving degree.
International applicants who have successfully completed the equivalent of four courses in an Australian Bachelor Degree with a GPA of 2.0 and no double-fail in any required course of the receiving degree.
Open Universities Australia (OUA) applicants:
Successful completion of two Open Universities Australia higher education units with a GPA of 2.0.
Entrance requirements for international onshore applicants:
All non-Australian residents and overseas full-fee paying students are required to meet RMIT English language requirements. For more information on these requirements see English Language Requirements at RMIT.
Applicants with Work and Life experience:
You may satisfy the academic requirements by completing the STAT multiple choice. If you are applying to RMIT as an applicant with work or life experience, you may sit the STAT multiple choice if you:
- are 19 years of age or over as of 1 January in the year in which you will start your studies and
- have not been enrolled in secondary studies for at least two years and
- have no prior secondary school (Year 12), VET studies, HE studies or relevant work experience that can be considered for entry, or these do not meet the minimum academic requirements for the program
STAT results are valid for two years prior to the commencement of study and can be used to meet Year 12 English prerequisites. You are still required to meet all other program prerequisites or equivalents.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.
