Purpose of the Program

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) provides training and education in the major disciplines of Laboratory Medicine.  This program with its professional practice component is designed to provide a qualification which will fully prepare you for employment in diagnostic pathology or medical research locally, nationally and internationally.  Delivery mode is face to face and requires on campus attendance.

During Year 3 and 4 of the program you will undertake the following capstone experiences:

MEDS2187 Professional Practice 1 Laboratory Medicine 
MEDS2188 Professional Practice 2 Laboratory Medicine
MEDS2153 Advanced Laboratory Medicine

The program is also a pathway to postgraduate studies in Laboratory Medicine, such as PhD by research.

Articulation and pathways

Graduates of the RMIT AD012 Associate Degree in Applied Science will be guaranteed entry into the BP147P12A Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) program and receive credit to a value of 120 credit points (Note: A standard year of full-time undergraduate study at RMIT University is 96 credit points) 

NB: While the total value of the credit offered exceeds 1 standard year of full time study, the amount of time required to complete the remaining study may exceed 3 years.

Graduates of the RMIT C5388 Diploma of Laboratory Technology program who successfully complete certain option courses, are guaranteed entry into the BP147P12A Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) with 96 credit points of credit. Graduates of the RMIT MSL50016 C5362 Diploma of Laboratory Technology (Pathology Testing) or MSL50016 C5363 Diploma of Laboratory Technology (Biotechnology) program and have completed the course HWSS6065C Recognise healthy body systems, will be guaranteed entry into the BP147P12A Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) with 96 credit points (= 1 year of study).

NB: While the total value of the credit offered is 1 standard year of full time study, the amount of time required to complete the remaining study may exceed 3 years.

As a successful graduate of BP147P12A Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine), you may (upon application) be eligible for credit into other RMIT University programs. Entrance requirements

Very Important: This program is being phased out.

BP147P12A - Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) has been discontinued and will no longer accept new students after Semester 2 2022.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent.

Prerequisites

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 — a study score of at least 20 in Chemistry or Biology; and study score of at least 20 in one of Mathematics (any) or Physics; and a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.

English language requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) is accredited with conditions by the Australian Institute of Medical Scientists (AIMS) https://www.aims.org.au/.

The program was accredited by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS) for students commencing studies between 2014 and 2018. Graduates who commenced the program from 2019 onwards can apply directly to IBMS for recognition of their degree. 

The program has formal links through the Laboratory Medicine Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) as well as to the broader organisation and industry links eg: the School's broader industry engagement strategy.

Industry links include hospital pathology laboratories, private pathology laboratories, research institutes, commercial companies, Department of Health, and professional bodies including AIMS, Australian Association of Clinical Biochemists (AACB), Australian Society for Microbiology (ASM).

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
