Approach to learning and assessment

The learning experiences that you will encounter include lectures, laboratory classes, group work, tutorials, and self-directed learning. These activities will provide a varied learning environment which will align with the objectives and dimensions of capability development in the program.  Learning materials will include specialized textbooks, scientific journal articles, and lecture/laboratory notes.  Some of this material can be assessed via myRMIT.

You will be assessed by a variety of methods.  Assessments may include written assignments, on-line quizzes, laboratory reports, oral presentations, project portfolio, and formal theory.  The method of assessment will be appropriate for specific capabilities of the program.  The evidence of capability achievement will be demonstrated by your performance in the assessment tasks.

If you have a long term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods.  Please contact the Equitable Learning Service https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services to discuss any adjustments you may require.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): http://www.rmit.edu.au/students/enrolment/credit/he.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations; and
  • these interactions and the work context provide a distinctive source of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be in a simulated workplace environment.

The following courses provide work integrated learning (WIL):

  • MEDS2201 Professional Skills for Laboratory Medicine 1: This course is designed to prepare you for professional practice and employment in a diagnostic laboratory.
  • MEDS2202 Professional Practice Laboratory Medicine 1: In this course you will experience a 16-week placement in an industry setting where you will gain competency skills and experience required to work in diagnostic pathology.

You will be assessed on professional or vocational work in a workplace setting (real or simulated) and receive feedback from those involved in your industry.

Program transition plan

BP147P21 Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine) program will be formally discontinued from Semester 1, 2024 and all students will be transferred into the BH129 Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours) program from then on.

Domestic & International Students
You do not need to apply for the program as a program transfer will be processed on your behalf. For information and details on this program, visit BH129 Bachelor of Laboratory Medicine (Honours).

All courses completed in BP147P21 will be credited towards BH129. Please see below credit mapping table for details.

You will be required to enrol in PUBH1425 Indigenous Health and Diversity  as follow:

  • In year two PUBH1425 should be undertaken instead of Uni elective (Year 1 BP147P21 transitioning students), or

  • If you have already completed a University Elective, you may choose between PUBH1425 or a program option in year three
