Program Learning Outcomes Statement

The program learning outcomes for this program reflect the Professional capabilities for medical radiation practice developed by the Medical Radiation Practice Board of Australia (MRPBA professional capabilities).

Professional and ethical conduct

• practise in an ethical and professional manner, consistent with relevant legislation and regulatory requirements
• provide each patient/client with an appropriate level of dignity and care
• assume responsibility, and accept accountability, for professional decisions, and
• advocate on behalf of the patient/client, when appropriate, within the context of the practitioner’s particular division of registration.

Communication and collaboration

• communicate clearly, sensitively and effectively with patient/client and your family or carers, and
• collaborate with other health practitioners.

Evidence based practice and professional learning

• apply critical and reflective thinking to resolve clinical challenges, and 
• identify ongoing professional learning needs and opportunities. 

Radiation safety and risk management

• implement safe radiation practice appropriate to your division of registration
• protect and enhance patient/client safety
• confirm and operate equipment and instrumentation safely as appropriate to your division of registration
• maintain safety of self and others in the work environment appropriate to your division of registration, and
• safely manage radiation and radioactivity in the environment.

Practice in medical radiation sciences

• apply an understanding of anatomy, physiology and pathology that is appropriate to your division of registration
• apply principles of medical radiation physics and instrumentation 
• use patient information management systems appropriately 
• confirm the procedure according to clinical indicators
• assess patient/client’s capacity to receive care
• deliver patient/client care appropriate to your division of registration
• manage and manipulate 3D datasets for diagnostic image production, and 
• apply knowledge of pharmaceuticals relevant to your division of registration. 

Practice in radiation therapy (BP148RT)

• apply knowledge of stabilisation devices related to radiation therapy
• apply treatment simulation techniques
• apply knowledge of treatment planning 
• implement computed tomography (CT) imaging for oncologic treatment planning, and
• implement treatment techniques according to approved plans.
• explain the principles and clinical applications of ultrasound imaging and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, and 
• alert the appropriate health professional when they observe significant findings of a medically urgent nature.
