Approach to learning and assessment

You will experience a wide range of learning environments – lectures, tutorials, online delivery and individual and group work. Of particular importance will be the high proportion of time spent doing group work, in the laboratory and undertaking project work, which will give practical emphasis, a reinforcement OHS principles, develop teamwork and time-management skills and provide context for the students learning.

In-class discussions, revision problems, and past exam papers are available for you to gauge your understanding of the lecture material.

You will be assessed by a variety of methods, as appropriate to the material being taught and the skills being acquired. Exams, assignments, oral and written presentations, laboratory reports and project reports will all be used as part of, and as a measure of, your learning. When you successfully complete this program, the reports from both the science and business courses will provide an extensive portfolio of material for you to show to prospective employers.

Several courses in the program are delivered online, rather than on-campus, and you are likely to find that other courses transition to online delivery as you progress through the program. Many courses are also making use of Canvas for electronic provision of course material, tutorial problems, past exams and other relevant documents.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

• undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;

• interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;

• complete these activities in real work contexts or situations; and

• these interactions and the work context provide a distinctive source of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated.

The School of Science offers two final year work integrated learning courses. The first of these is  ENVI1145Environmental Sampling and Analysis which occurs in final year providing  you with the type of  experience expected in workplace on an extended field trip. You will work in teams to put together a report on the state of the environment under study, employing the skills that you have learnt during the course of your degree.

The second course is a Science Project (ONPS2186) under the supervision of an academic staff-member, engaged with one of our many industry partners. Here the emphasis is on teamwork , research and professional report writing.

School of Business

As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will be provided with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. The designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) courses in this program are:

• BUSM3125 Strategy (12 credit points)
• BUSM4177 Leadership (12 credit points), and
• BUSM4546 Organisational Experience (12 credit points)

These courses will provide you with opportunities to apply your academic skills to a work-based context. 

In particular, you will:

• undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice; and
   
• be involved in authentic engagement with partner organisations that includes industry feedback.

These learning opportunities may be in the form of industry-based projects, simulations or placements.
