Purpose of the Program

The objective of this program is to develop your knowledge and skills essential for the information technology industry so you will be employable as a competent software developer.

You will gain an excellent combination of knowledge and practical, hands-on expertise to influence an organisation's technology infrastructure and the clients who use IT.

Aligned with skill demand in local ICT industry, you can choose program option courses to complete a specialisation stream in one of the following employability paths:

- Web and Mobile Computing

- Security and Cloud Computing

- Data Management

- Software Systems Development

- Artificial Intelligence

- Software Sysyems Analysis

- Systems Administration

As a graduate of this program, you may be responsible for selecting and deploying software products appropriate for commercial organisations, software development companies, government departments and large computer organisations. You may also create and manage business applications, web sites, systems and environments.

In the third year capstone course, COSC2693 Programming Project 1, you will attain hands-on experience in the development of a substantial piece of software: integrating practice and theory.

Articulation and pathways


Articulation agreements between RMIT programs enable students graduating from an RMIT qualification to achieve credit in a higher level qualification. The table below provides you with information about articulation agreements with this program.

If you are applying for BP162OUA17, Bachelor of Information Technology and you are a graduate of AD006P11, Associate Degree in Information Technology you will be able to claim credit for courses you have already completed.  

Subject to cumulative GPA requirements (see table), successful completion of AD006P11, Associate Degree in Information Technology guarantees entry into this program, with 192 credit points credit (equivalent to 2 years).

Entrance requirements

To be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place in this degree, you must be:

- An Australian citizen residing in Australia for all or part of your studies OR

- A New Zealand citizen who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study OR

- The holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study OR

- The holder of a permanent humanitarian visa will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study

- Able to meet the university course admission requirements

Please note: You can still enrol and pay for your units via FEE-HELP or an upfront payment if you are not eligible for CSP.

Program entry requirements

Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education or equivalent, with a minimum ATAR of 65

Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) prerequisite units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 20 in Mathematics (any), and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English. 

English Language Requirements

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band below 6.0; or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English equivalents web page.

Selection requirements - via OUA open access:

Successful completion of two units from within the Information Technology discipline. Suggested two units for completion are CPT110 and CPT120.
It is expected and therefore suggested that a student completing this degree have a good understanding of maths concepts.

External accreditation and industry links

The School of Science has substantial links with the ICT industry both within Australia and internationally. Employers and industry professionals are members of our Program Advisory Committee and have contributed to the initial development and ongoing improvement of the program. Their involvement ensures that the program remains relevant to your needs as a graduate and the needs of graduate employers. The committee meets quarterly and provides feedback on the currency of the programs, the changing needs of Industry and has input into the design of new programs. It also actively contributes to the School through participation in seminars, marketing events, industry awards and scholarships.

Many of the teaching staff within the program are practising (or have been) industry professionals with extensive industry experience and contact networks. This experience, when integrated into teaching and learning practice, enriches your learning environment.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
