Approach to learning and assessment

The program uses a variety of teaching and learning approaches, with a major focus on intensive studio and workshop practice. The studios and workshops are places in which you will refine and develop your practical, theoretical and conceptual skills through a combination of directed and self-directed learning with regular engagement in review, critical reflection and analysis of work through discussion with staff and peers in both individual consultations and group tutorials. Guided independent research forms an integral part of the program structure focusing on locating and developing your personal artistic practice within a broader understanding of historical and contemporary art critique and discourse.

Feedback will also be given to help you track how your learning is progressing against the specified course and program learning outcomes for each course. The details of assessment in each course are listed within the Course Guides. Assessment varies between courses and will include one or more of the following modes:

Folio of Resolved Artworks: the presentation of a folio of work that demonstrates practical, theoretical and conceptual outcomes of studio/workshop based assignments/projects and activities
Documentation of methods and process: the presentation of practice-led research that demonstrates your working methods and processes
Essays:  the presentation of ideas and arguments that respond to historical and contemporary art critique and discourse,
Written Materials: the presentation of artist's statements, work proposals, grant applications and practice-led methodologies
Presentations: oral, written, digital, visual, sonic presentations of your ideas and research

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) http://www.rmit.edu.au/ students/enrolment/credit/he

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will: undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice; interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
complete these activities in real work contexts or situations; and in addition these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning. Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated.

The Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) has work integrated learning (WIL) at the core of its practice.  You will learn by doing in the context of Fine Art with feedback from Academic staff who are practicing industry professionals, peer groups and external industry professionals. The key feature of WIL experiences in BP201 is assessed professional work in a real and / or simulated context in which feedback from clients and others from industry and the community is integral to the experience.

All students in BP201P16 engage in core WIL activities and may also have the opportunity to extend this experience through a variety of Special Industry Projects such as internships, placements and the opportunity to work with visiting artists, curators, historians and writers within the Arts industry and the community. Please note internships and industry placements are not core courses but are optional.

The two work integrated learning courses in this program are:
VART3647 Fine Art Studio 4:
In this course you will create, process, research, analyse and engage with practice, peers, ideas and industry through a trial exhibition project receiving feedback from industry professionals.

VART 3654 Art Enterprise Workshop:
In this course you will be encouraged to develop entrepreneurial skills to design your own future in preparation for making contributions to the cultural and creative industries. You will develop an archive of your studio practice and write an industry proposal receiving feedback from industry professionals.

Industry Placement Requirements
The School of Art offers an Intership VART 3510 course that you can enroll in as a university elective. An agreement including schedule and relevant insurance documentation is required to be completed before commencing each placement (local and international). International placements must be registered and processed through RMIT Education Abroad. In the case where a placement ends early, please refer to 6. Early Termination of Placements in the Work Integrated Learning Procedure.

Program transition plan

In 2018, the BP201P16 Bachelor of Art (Fine Art) will update its program structure. The existing structure will have its last intake in 2017. All new commencing students after this date will enroll into the newly amended program structure effective Semester 1, 2018.

If you are an existing student in BP201P16 Bachelor of Art (Fine Art) you will be provided with a study plan and a transition map of same or equivalent courses based on the tables below. Your academic progress will be considered and reviewed with an academic advisor.

Your study plan will outline:

  • Courses you have already completed in BP201P16 Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art)
  • Courses you are currently enrolled in (results pending) in BP201P16 Bachelor of Art (Fine Art)
  • Courses, if any, that you will need to complete in the amended program structure in order to graduate with the award of BP201P16 Bachelor of Art (Fine Art).

If you are undertaking a reduced load, are on Leave of Absence (LOA), or have deferred studies you will not be disadvantaged by the change of program structure. You will not incur any extra costs or be required to complete extra credit points as a result of this change in program structure.

If you were enrolled in BP201P16 Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art) and have not fully completed the first year of your program by the end of 2017 you will enrol into the new structure of the program effective Semester 1, 2018. You will need to check if any first year courses you did not complete are included in the transition map below. The transition map identifies courses completed in the old structure of the program, and courses you will need to complete in the new structure in order to graduate with the award of BP201P16 Bachelor of Arts (Fine Art).

The following transition mapping shows courses in the old version of the program and the equivalent courses that will be offered in the new version of the program structure.

The transition map will only be relevant if you need to re-enrol in a course that you have not passed.
