Purpose of the Program

The program offers you a generalist communications degree incorporating courses and specialist study in Journalism, Media, Advertising and Public Relations. The interdisciplinary nature of the degree reflects the workplace reality of increasing integration of these professions. The degree integrates professional practice with theoretical frameworks. It encourages creative and critical thinking, and offers diversity in approaches to teaching and learning.

Across the professional communication disciplines, you will be actively engaged in a range of teaching modes and learning environments including studios, lectures and workshops. The program's capstone course will consolidate and extend your discipline knowledge through individual and collaborative projects.

On completion of the program you will be a practitioner with broad knowledge of the media and communications industries. You will be able to analyse issues, work with others and communicate informed ideas and apply independent judgement to problems within a global communications context.

Graduates in this program can expect to work in professional roles, both local and international, in a variety of areas such as communication consultancies, journalism, broadcast and online media, government policy, and advertising.

Entrance requirements

Academic entrance requirements: Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 or equivalent senior secondary school studies, or RMIT Foundation Studies program, or a recognised post secondary diploma or certificate in a relevant discipline. Applicants with post secondary work experience in this field will also be considered.

VCE requirements: Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 35 in English (any).

International English language requirements:

  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (no band less than 6.0)
  • TOEFL (Paper based): 580 (TWE 4.5)
  • TOEFL (Internet Based Test – iBT): Overall score of 92 with minimum of 20 in any sections
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE(A)): 58 (no band less than 50)
  • Cambridge English – Advanced (CAE): CAE Grade B
  • RMIT English Worldwide (REW) – English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs: Advanced Plus certificate

Extra requirements
Non year 12 applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Personal History online or an applicant statement. Applicants should include the following in the form: reasons for wanting to study Professional Communication, and demonstrate awareness of the current media environment and the importance of developing skills across the industry sectors of Journalism, Media Production and Public Relations.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Resources available from the Library
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT http://www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.

Online learning tools and content
As a student in this program you may access online learning tools and content for your program and associated courses from the student portal, myRMIT http://www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit.

Course guides will identify print and electronic resources available to help you complete all your learning and assessment tasks. There are also specific resources available on campus that will assist you in the program. The University Library has a large collection of Media and Communication related books, journals and electronic resources, as well as an extensive audio-visual collection.

The Australian Film Institute Research Collection – the largest collection of its kind in the country – is managed by the School of Media and Communication and provides a unique resource for students.

You also have access to specialised media labs, production equipment and resources throughout the degree.
