Approach to learning and assessment

Studio-based learning is a distinguishing feature of the program. In studios, learning emerges through making - an investigative and creative process driven by research, exploration and experimentation, and critique and reflection.

You will experience a variety of learning and teaching modes and approaches, in developing the skills of a media and communication professional. Learning and teaching modes may include interactive seminars with case studies, online components, lectures and tutorials with presentations in large and small classes, group-based learning, computer-based activities, and negotiated learning such as work-based projects. Elements of this program may be delivered face-to-face, online or a mix of both.

This program utilises a range of assessment approaches to evaluate student learning against stated learning outcomes and program learning outcomes for the individual courses.  Assessments may include written submissions such as essays, literature reviews, online publications; oral presentations; assignments and projects.

Feedback will also be given to help you track how your learning is progressing against the specified learning outcomes and program learning outcomes for each course, with strengths highlighted and recommendations given on areas for improvement.  You will also be given opportunities to provide feedback on the course to enable ongoing development of learning and teaching content and processes.

RMIT Advice

If you have a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition or are the primary carer of individuals with a disability it is possible to have adjustments arranged and negotiated to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Program Manager or the Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)
If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL): https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/student-essentials/enrolment/apply-for-credit

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;
  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

In this program, you will be doing specific courses that focus on work integrated learning (WIL).  You will be assessed on professional or vocational work in a work place setting (real or simulated) and receive feedback from those involved in your industry.  The WIL course in this program is:

  • COMM2675 Professional Communication Studio (24cp)

This course includes a work-integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in project-based learning, where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience. In this course, you will gain experience in professional communication practices and processes by working on real-world briefs.

Internship Requirements

In this program you will undertake an internship in COMM2639 Media and Communication Internship (12cp). An agreement including schedule and relevant insurance documentation is required to be completed before commencing each internship (local and international). International internship must be registered and processed through RMIT Global Mobility.

For international placements: You may require immunizations and/or current visa depending on the  location of your placement.

In the case where a placement ends early, please refer to the WIL Procedure.
