Purpose of the Program

This program allows you to prepare for a career as a scientist in one of the following major specialisations:

  • Biology
  • Biotechnology

There are suggested plans for each of these specialisations to ensure that you derive the appropriate depth of understanding for your major field. In addition, you can individualise your program to an extent by taking other science courses offered by the School of Sciences. This allows you a degree of flexibility to combine a major field of study with a variety of other science courses to help achieve your vocational and academic goals.

 The common first year ensures that all students have a foundation of academic experience across many fields of science. This breadth of experience will enhance your employability and also enable you to make an informed decision about your intended major and/ or any individualisation of your course of study.

This program has one capstone, work integrated learning (WIL) Unit: The Professional Scientist where you work in teams to develop a research proposal

Entrance requirements

To be eligible for a Commonwealth supported place in this degree,you must be:

  • An Australian citizen residing in Australia for all or part of your studies OR
  • A New Zealand citizen who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study OR
  • The holder of a permanent visa who will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study OR
  • The holder of a permanent humanitarian visa will be residing in Australia for the duration of your study
  • Able to meet the university course admission requirements

Please note:You can still enrol and pay for your units via FEE-HELP or an upfront payment if you are not eligible for CSP.

Students must satisfy the following requirements in order to be eligible for entry into the degree:

Applicants need to meet one of the following:

Current Year 12

  • Successful completion of an Australian yr 12 or equivalent qualification with a minimum ATAR of 65.
  • Prerequisites: VCE prerequisite units 3 and 4– a study score of at least 20 in Mathematics (any), and a study score of at least 30 in English (EAL) or at least 25 in any other English.

Non Year 12:

  • Successful completion of one semester of full time study (four standard courses) towards an Australian Undergraduate or higher level of study, or equivalent qualification; and 
  • Evidence of meeting maths entry requirement equivalent to VCE prerequisite units 3 and 4– a study score of at least 20 in Mathematics (any).
  • Completed Australian Advanced Diploma, or equivalent qualification, and evidence of meeting maths entry requirement equivalent to VCE prerequisite units 3 and 4– a study score of at least 20 in Mathematics (any).
  • Completed Australian Diploma, or equivalent qualification, and evidence of meeting maths entry requirement equivalent to VCE prerequisite units 3 and 4– a study score of at least 20 in Mathematics (any).

Selection requirements - via OUA open access:

  • Successful completion of two units from within the Science discipline. Suggested units for completion are MAS120 and SCB100.

You have the opportunity to access a wide range of industrial contacts through the extensive research programs within the School, many of which are undertaken in collaboration with external organizations.

This program has a Program Advisory Committee which includes external members drawn from diverse external industries and institutions. They provide further opportunities for networking and are a useful link in ensuring that the teaching material and student capabilities remain close to the needs of future external employers.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Resources available from the Library
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
