Objectives of the program

This program has been designed:

1.    To produce graduates who have the skills, knowledge and capabilities to work effectively as science and/or mathematics and/or food and technology teachers in primary and secondary schools.

2.    To produce graduates who are flexible and aware of the changing environment and their role in equipping young people to operate effectively within this environment.

3.    To produce graduates who are able to provide peer support, leadership and direction within a range of educational and community settings.

4.    To assist students in the development of practical skills in teaching and engaging young people in science, mathematics and/or food and technology.

5.    To provide a pre-service science teacher education that extensively covers the skills and knowledge essential for a scientifically literate society.

6.    To deliver a program that meets real world needs and is workplace relevant and is collaborative across the Schools of Applied Sciences and Education.

This program will meet the identified skill shortages in the areas of Science and/or Home Economics primary and secondary teachers and provide an articulated pathway to science teaching for science students, rather than as an end on program. Students interested in a science teaching career will gain a solid grounding in education studies contemporaneously with the science studies through studies in this double degree.

Due to Victorian Institute of Teaching requirements for registration articulation is not applicable for this program.

If you have partially completed a Science or Education degree you may be eligible to apply for a transfer into the program with appropriate RPL.

Entrance requirements

For local students who are recent school leavers, the following prerequisites for entrance to the program will be required:

  • VCE Units 3 and 4 – one of Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics and
  • VCE Units 3 and 4 - a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English, or equivalent qualifications from other states.

Mature-age applicants are encouraged to apply and should have evidence of equivalent knowledge and experience and/or ability to meet the demands of the program. Consideration will be given to such factors as academic results, work experience and relevancy of work experience etc.

If you are from a non-English speaking background, you should satisfy the standard RMIT requirements for entry to bachelor degree programs. These include:

English Language

One of the following:

  • IELTS – 6.5+ (no band less than 6.0)
  • TOEFL – Paper-Based = 580+ (TWE 4.5+)
  • TOEFL – Computer-Based = 237+ (TWE 4.5+)
  • REW – English for Academic Purposes Advanced 1 & 2

Academic

Successful completion of Year 12/Foundations Studies program or equivalent.

External accreditation and industry links

This program is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) (www.vit.vic.edu.au).

 

In order to teach in Victoria, graduates must be registered with VIT. Successful completion of this program will allow you to apply for Provisonal Registration with VIT. To obtain Provisional Registration, graduates are required to complete a VIT Registration application form and submit it to the Institute. Further information on the registration process and requirements can be found here. On successful completion of this program you will be able to register as primary and secondary teachers of Science (General and Specialist) and/or Home Economics (Food and Technology) and Health.

 

Your registration will also be recognised nationally (www.vit.vic.edu.au/finditfast/Pages/Links.aspx) through the Australasian Teacher Regulatory Authorities (ATRA) (www.atra.edu.au). Reciprocal registration is also possible in a range of overseas education settings

 

In developing this program the following industry and University groups have been consulted:

  • Current students in secondary schools and students in the Bachelor of Science.
  • Program Advisory Committee, Teacher Education (including the Australian Education Union)
  • The Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT)

The program has strong support from these groups as it provides for the educational needs of students interested in science teaching in primary and secondary schools. The ongoing demand for science teachers will mean that this program continues to address both current and future skills shortages.

 

The program also has strong links with the education industry through its professional practice program in schools and with scientific industries through extensive research programs undertaken collaboratively between the School of Applied Sciences and industry groups.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.

The Bundoora West Campus has good Library holdings and other IT and specialist resources to support the students of this program. The development of information literacy is an essential aspect of lifelong and life-wide learning and will be incorporated within programs in line with the Australian and New Zealand Information Literacy Framework (2004). These standards will be developed through the information experiences provided as a matter of course within the program as well as through dedicated activities conducted in conjunction with the library. Library sessions will be a continuing feature of each program taught into a key course in each program. They will emphasise the ability to understand and analyse a research question; awareness of the range of information resources available for searching scholarly literature, including specialist and generalist databases; the ability to search and modify searches in key resources; knowledge of issues around the access to and management of information through programs such as Endnote.

Course materials

Course materials (printed course notes, textbooks, reference books and recommended reading) are available from the RMIT Bookshop and the RMIT University Library.

Course web pages contain links to download worksheets and assignment specifications, email teaching staff, and access message forums, as well as links to external course-related web sites. Lecturers provide additional suitably formatted electronic files and handouts to visually impaired students upon request.
