Purpose of the Program

This program has been designed:

  •  To produce graduates who have the skills, knowledge and capabilities to work effectively as specialist arts and generalist teachers in primary schools.
  • To produce graduates who have current curricular, pedagogical and assessment knowledge and can contribute to its development within professional communities.
  • To produce graduates who are flexible and skilled in performing their educational role with children within a range of educational settings.
  • To produce graduates who are able to provide peer support, leadership and direction within a range of educational and community settings.
  • To assist students in the development of practical skills in teaching and in engaging children in learning.
  • To provide a pre-service teacher education that extensively covers the skills and knowledge essential for a 21st Century society.
  • To deliver a program that meets real world needs and is workplace relevant.

Entrance requirements

Academic entrance requirements: Successful completion of an Australian Year 12 or equivalent senior secondary school studies, or RMIT Foundation Studies program, or a recognised post secondary diploma or certificate in a relevant discipline. Applicants also need successful completion of Year 11/Foundation mathematics.

VCE requirements: Units 1 and 2 – general mathematics or mathematical methods (CAS) or Units 3 and 4 – mathematics (any). Units 3 and 4 – a study score of at least 30 in English (ESL) or at least 25 in any other English.

International English language requirements:

  • IELTS (Academic): 6.5 (no band less than 6.0)
  • TOEFL (Paper based): 580 (TWE 4.5)
  • TOEFL (Internet Based Test – iBT): Overall score of 92 with minimum of 20 in any sections
  • Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE(A)): 58 (no band less than 50)
  • Cambridge English – Advanced (CAE): CAE Grade B
  • RMIT English Worldwide (REW) – English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs: Advanced Plus certificate

Extra requirements
Non year 12 applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Personal History online or an applicant statement explaining their reasons for wanting to study the course and include details of any relevant work or other experience.

External accreditation and industry links

External Accreditation

The Bachelor of Education is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) (www.vit.vic.edu.au). 

In order to teach in Victoria, graduates must be registered with VIT. Successful completion of this program will allow you to apply for Provisonal Registration with VIT. To obtain Provisional registration, graduates are required to complete a VIT Registration application form and submit to the Institute. Industry Links

The School of Education has an established reputation for providing educational and vocational leadership in creating knowledge for the future through work with client groups within primary, secondary and tertiary education, communities and enterprises. Through the established Program Advisory Group, the School gains advice on emergent issues within the sectors of education from industry representatives. These biannual meetings and other forums throughout the year inform the School's programs to be responsive to sectorial needs, issues and opportunities within different sectors of the education industry as they relate to curriculum renewal and design.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service. The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.

The Bundoora West campus has good holdings and other IT and specialist resources to support the students of this program as has the Educational resources Centre at the University fo Melbourne.  The Education holdings at the Brunswick Campus will be developed apace with the implementation of this program.

The information literacy of the students will be developed in line with the standards approved by teh Council of Australian University Librarians (2000).  These standards will be developed through the information and experiences provided as a matter of course within the program as well as through dedicated activities conducted in conjunction with the library.  The development of information literacy will be contributed to by;

  • The incorporation of Info-trek into the student portfolio assessment requirements for professional registration.  Students will use the online tutorial developed by the library as the guidelines for the investigation of a topic relevant ot the disability sector.
  • Students will complete orientation to the library sessions for introductions ot the library catalogue, web based resources, information databases, and programs such as Endnote.

Course material (printed course notes, textbooks and reference books) are available from the RMIT Bookshop nad the RMIT Library.  Course web pages contain links to download worksheets and assignment specifications, email teaching staff, and access message forums, as well as links to external course-related web sites.  Lecturers provide additional suitability formatted electronic files and handouts to visually impaired students upon request.
