Approach to learning and assessment

This program aims to inspire, challenge and motivate a sense of curiosity and discovery.  It will give you the opportunity to engage in a learner-centred and critical self reflection.  You will experience a flexible learning environment that blends a high level of on-line presence with directed lectures, structured practical sessions, supportive tutorials and small group work.  Several courses in the program are delivered online, rather than on-campus, and you are likely to find that other courses transition to online delivery as you progress through the program.

Assessment is multifaceted and progressive. While traditional forms such as examinations and assignments are used, in some areas a variety of practical assessment approaches are used to provide feedback as well as grading your level of skills obtained. This may take the form of demonstration of practical skills on a model subject or a viva voce style oral examination.

Tools used include case studies, seminars, group work, on-line teaching components and intensive block teaching designed to have constructive alignment with the stages of Professional Integrated Learning (known at RMIT University as Work Integrated Learning).

Much of the learning material is available online; however, attendance at the teaching clinics for patient-engagement is mandatory.

As chiropractic is a caring profession, every effort is made on a per-case basis to accommodate students with special needs. In turn, the special needs of patients within the teaching clinics is used as a learning experience.

If you have a long term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods.  Please contact the Equitable Learning Service https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services to discuss any adjustments you may require.

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at: http://www.rmit.edu.au/students/enrolment/credit/.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;

In addition, these interactions and the work context provide a distinctive source of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be real or in a simulated workplace environment.

In the following courses, you will learn the necessary skills to simulate a doctor/patient interaction in the clinical encounter. This will include assessment skills, case history taking and examination and management skills including communication with patient:

  • REHA2164 Chiropractic 2
  • MEDS2146 Medical Examination 1
  • MEDS2147 Medical Examination 2
  • REHA2198 Chiropractic 4 Practical
  • REHA2199 Chiropractic 5 Practical

The following courses introduce you to the Chiropractic patient care environment in the Chiropractic Clinic. This will prepare you for real life clinical Chiropractic encounters:

  • REHA2200 Chiropractic 6 Practical
  • REHA2204 Chiropractic Clinical Practice 1
  • REHA2240 Chiropractic Clinical Practice 4
