Approach to learning and assessment

The program uses a variety of teaching and learning approaches including: interactive coursework, seminars, online components, case studies, action research, reflective techniques, individual and group presentations, group-based learning, discussions, negotiated learning (such as work-based projects) and virtual workplace experiences.

The degree provides you with the opportunity to gain important vocational skills that are transferable across many occupations or places of employment. These skills include communication, critical thinking, data analysis, problem solving, research and working as an individual or within a team or taskforce.

The program utilises a range of assessment methods to evaluate student learning, with the aim of developing critical and analytical thinking skills, research design capabilities for the workplace, problem solving abilities and high level communication skills. A range of assessment will enable you to demonstrate your skills and knowledge in all courses. Formal and informal assessment will be ongoing throughout the semester.

Assessment will include a variety of written genre along with class exercises, oral presentations, workshop and seminar facilitation and online activities. Assessment will provide opportunities for you to apply your learning to your developing professional practice.

You will also be involved in providing lecturers with feedback about the courses you study as part of the University’s course review process.

If you have a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition or are the primary carer of individuals with a disability it is possible to have adjustments arranged and negotiated to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Program Manager or the Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience.
In particular:

  • You will undertake and be assessed on a structured activity that allows you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice
  • You will interact with industry and community when undertaking this activity
  • The WIL activity is completed in a work context or situation and may include teamwork with other students from different disciplines.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated in a workplace environment. These interactions and the context provide a distinctive source of feedback to you that will underpin your learning.

In the Bachelor of Criminology and Psychology, the value of WIL is for you to learn and demonstrate your professional capability in an applied setting.  You can bring knowledge, skills and ethics developed during the program to real work and professional situations as you undertake supervised practice in field agencies.  WIL also offers opportunities for you to appreciate the range of roles and tasks found in psychology and related professional fields, and to develop professional networks to assist your transition into graduate employment.

The specific WIL courses in this program are:

  • SOCU2114 Case Management Practice, is a skill based course which provides the theoretical underpinnings for working with managing clients as a practitioner within justice and other settings.  Role plays which intergrate theory and practice provide with provide you with the opportunity to develop relevant practitioner skills in case mangement.
  • BESC1453, Professional Practices in Psychology, provides you with theoretical and practical skills associated with work. You will explore organizational responsibilities (such as professional ethics) and develop fundamental job skills. This 12 credit point course enables you to also explore diversity in the work environment.
