Approach to learning and assessment

This is a ‘hands-on’ program, with an emphasis on studio-based learning, seminars and workshops. As noted, the program also includes work-integrated learning through industry engagements and internships.

Two capstone courses are also provided: these provide you with an opportunity to develop your own integrated design projects in two selected design disciplines.

Each course is assessed according to its own learning outcomes. Refer to course guides for more details. There are normally two or three formal assignments for each course, each with its own assessment criteria. Note that assignment work contributes to the development of a personal portfolio of design work by the end of the program.

Academic integrity

The university employs a number of approaches to monitor the academic integrity of your work. More information on academic integrity is located at: https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/my-course/assessment-results/academic-integrity.

If you are living with a disability, long-term illness and/or a mental health condition, we can support you by making adjustments to activities in your program so that you can participate fully in your studies. To receive learning adjustments, you need to register with Equitable Learning Services (https://www.rmit.edu.vn/students/support/wellbeing-support/equitable-learning-service/register).

The University considers the wellbeing and safety of all students, staff and the community to be a priority in on-campus learning and professional experience settings (https://www.rmit.edu.vn/student-life/support-services).

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional practice and workplace experience. By enrolling in an RMIT program you will:

  • Undertake and be assessed on a structured activity that allows you to learn, apply and demonstrate professional or vocational practice.
  • Interact with industry and community when undertaking this activity.
  • Complete assignments and activities in a work context or situation that may include teamwork with other students from different disciplines.
  • Have your learning underpinned by feedback gained from interactions and contexts distinctive to workplace experiences.

There are various aspects of WIL throughout the program, including:

  • Creative Short Talks series—Where international and national designers provide talks and workshops to all Design Studies students
  • Year 1—a series of professional guest speakers
  • Year 2—projects working with local clients and NGOs, industry and technical experts, through skills and workshops; and
  • Year 3—Capstone projects working with institutions and organisations. These provide opportunities, in each year, for you to evaluate your future career options and preferences.

The WIL courses in this program are:

  • GRAP2909 Design Studies – Capstone Studio 1
  • GRAP2910 Design Studies – Capstone Studio 2
  • GRAP2911 Professional Practice – Design Internship

Market research indicates strong alignment between graduate learning outcomes and international market needs in design industries, and growing local (Vietnam) demand for design graduates with effective design-thinking and creative skills.
