Top of pagePurpose of the Program
The Bachelor of Languages will develop your advanced bilingualism and communication skills and prepare you for a career in language related fields. You will acquire knowledge of the nature and politics of language as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills in a language other than English. You will also gain deep social and cultural knowledge of the countries where the target language is spoken, a greater appreciation for and openness towards other peoples and cultures in general, and enhanced intercultural competence and professional communication skills.
The program provides an overview of popular theory, issues and opportunities in language and related industries. You will have the option to choose a major (or double major), minor (or double minor) and/or electives that prepare you for a career in this field. The professionally oriented minor streams will provide you with a pathway to a further qualification in these areas. These qualities will increase your employment prospects, as employers in many industries will recognise the benefits of such qualities in the multilingual and multicultural communities of today’s globalised world.
The core courses provide a foundation of strong theoretic and practical intercultural knowledge for international social and work life. A project-based capstone course (LANG1342 Language and Culture - Capstone Project) and internship (LANG1320 Language and Culture Internship) ensure that you will have ample opportunity to apply your studies to real life experiences.
The program offers opportunities for further learning through extra-curricular activities such as student-run language clubs, international exchange programs and study tours. This program requires students to attend classes on campus.

Upon successful completion of this program you may be eligible to undertake further studies in related programs at RMIT including the Master of Translating and Interpreting, and Master of Global Studies, subject to each program’s entry requirements.

You must have successfully completed the Vietnamese Upper Secondary (High School) Graduation Diploma with a minimum GPA of 7.0/10.0 for Grade 12

English language requirements:
A minimum of IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.5, with no band less than 6.0, or equivalent. For equivalents to English entry requirements, see the English requirements web page.
Other requirements
You are required to demonstrate your proficiency in your selected language other than English (LOTE).
- If you are applying to the Japanese stream (either as a major or minor), you must complete the LOTE and Japanese placement form. You may be required to complete a Japanese placement test.
- If you are applying to the Translating and Interpreting stream (either as a major or minor) and selecting Japanese as your LOTE, you must complete the LOTE and Japanese placement form. You may be required to complete a Japanese placement test.
- If you are applying to the Translating and Interpreting stream (either as a major or minor) and selecting Vietnamese as your LOTE, you must complete the LOTE and Japanese placement form if you have not spent all three years at a local high school in Vietnam. You may be required to complete an English-Vietnamese bilingual test.
- If you are applying to the Translating and Interpreting stream (either as a major or minor) and selecting a LOTE other than Vietnamese or Japanese, you must complete the LOTE and Japanese placement form. You may be required to complete a bilingual test. Additional languages may be offered subject to demand.

There is no external accreditation of the program with a specific industry body.
The program is taught by people with extensive industry experience and background. You will have the opportunity to undertake a professional placement during your degree. In addition, students who complete the Bachelor of Languages will be eligible to take an internationally recognised proficiency test in the target language (widely recognised by respective governments, employers and education institutions) and/or the national accreditation for translators and interpreters (NAATI).
The program maintains its links with current industry standards and practices through regular meetings with the Industry Advisory Committee. On these occasions, high-ranking officers from Japanese companies and Translating & Interpreting Services provide the program with the state-of-the-art in the industry and the knowledge and skills that are in demand in the local and international industry job market.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
