Approach to learning and assessment

Diverse activities within the program structure will maximize your learning and acquisition of skills and knowledge. Study and learning modes will include interactive seminars with case studies, online components, lectures and tutorials with presentations in large and small classes, group-based learning, computer-based activities, negotiated learning such as work-based projects, social and cultural simulations, language and culture exchange immersion activities, peer assisted learning and socializing and networking through oncampus language clubs. All students will benefit from cross-cultural internships.

Learning activities are contextualised and practically aimed at accelerating your acquisition of the program learning outcomes.

You will learn through a range of methods, which will include:

  • Social and cultural simulations
  • Language exchange and immersion activities with native speakers
  • Peer assisted learning
  • Self-directed and online learning
  • In-country learning opportunities – including short term study tours and semester exchange
  • Academic mentoring programs
  • Socialising and networking through on-campus language clubs

Assessment in this program is designed to provide you an opportunity to exercise evaluative, reflective and practical skills, while gauging your learning against the course and program learning outcomes. The structure of assessment projects and assignments will vary depending on the course content and objectives. Individual, group, self, and peer feedback will be regularly provided to help you identify your strengths and encourage you in areas for improvement. You will also have an opportunity to provide feedback to your teachers to enable the continuous improvement of learning and teaching content and processes.

Assessment tasks in this program will include some of the following:

  • Assignments and projects: some will require you to demonstrate an ability to work alone, while some will require you to be part of team with other students.
  • Reflective journals: where you pause to consider what you have learnt and reflect on the further development of the related capability.
  • Role-plays or presentations: a form of in-class test, which you will be required to do either individually or as a team.
  • Self-assessment and peer-assessment: you may be asked to assess your own work, the work of your group, or the work of other groups, which will equip you to become more independent in your own learning and develop your assessment and critical thinking skills.
  • Problem solving: where you will consider how to solve a communication problem, applying appropriate linguistic and cultural knowledge.
  • Examinations: you will undertake final oral (speaking), aural (listening) and written exams. The oral exams can be pair, group or individual.

If you are living with disability, long-term illness and/or a mental health condition, we can support you by making adjustments to activities in your program so that you can participate fully in your studies. To receive learning adjustments, you need to register with Equitable Learning Service

The University considers the wellbeing and safety of all students, staff and the community to be a priority in on-campus learning and professional experience settings.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;
  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

In this program, you will be doing specific courses that focus on work integrated learning (WIL). You will be assessed on professional or vocational work in a workplace setting (real or simulated) and receive feedback from those involved in your industry. The WIL courses in this program are:

  • LANG1342 Language and Culture - Capstone Project
  • LANG 1320 Language and Culture Internship

This course includes a work-integrated learning experience in which your knowledge and skills will be applied and assessed in project-based learning, where feedback from industry and/or community is integral to your experience. In this course, you will gain experience in professional cross cultural communication practices and processes by working on real-world briefs.

Internship Requirements

In this program you will undertake an internship in LANG1320 Language and Culture Internship. An agreement including schedule and relevant insurance documentation is required to be completed before commencing each internship.

Language and Culture - Capstone Project

This course will enable you to engage in an individually negotiated research project based on issues related to your professional context or in a setting of your choice. You will work collaboratively with peers on real-life industry problems with guidance from industry to understand the challenges raised. You will expand and enhance your cross-cultural communicative skills and knowledge through engaging in problem-based tasks that focus on language issues in a globalized context.
Designed as a capstone experience, this course requires you to synthesize and integrate knowledge, connect theory and practice as well as demonstrate holistic achievement of program learning outcomes. The course provides an opportunity for you to more deeply investigate a particular area of scholarship and professional practice in the field.
