Approach to learning and assessment

The Bachelor of Health, Physical Education and Sport program offers a range of teaching and learning experiences. These include lectures, tutorials, workshops, work integrated learning (teaching in schools), peer teaching, mentoring, coaching and applied exercise science practical lab experiences.

Your assessment includes a variety of tasks that relate to what will be required in teaching in schools. You will complete assignments, log books, portfolios, reflective journals, visual teaching analysis, coaching courses, lesson plans, units of work (curriculum-related) and mentoring. Assessment tasks also require you to “apply” your learning. Some tasks are individual and some involve group work.

Inherent requirements:

The following information outlines the tasks you may be required to undertake during professional placement and on-campus learning activities. The non-academic abilities listed are provided for information only and are not entry requirements.

If there are any activities outlined which may be difficult for you to undertake, there are a range of adjustments to your study conditions available to enable and support you to demonstrate these abilities. Please contact the Equitable Learning Service to discuss any adjustments you may require.

Some fundamental tasks for this program include:

  • reading, writing and number skills for demonstrating to students accurate reading, spelling, grammar and numeracy
  • vision and hearing to accurately gain information and monitor students
  • managing your behaviour and emotions to provide safe and competent teaching
  • time-based problem-solving when working with students

By understanding the types of activities you’ll participate in, and the non-academic abilities you may need in this program, you can:

  • understand more about the program
  • determine if you may need support during your studies
  • make an informed decision about whether the program is suitable for you

If you are living with disability, long-term illness and/or a mental health condition, we may be able to support you by making adjustments to activities in your program so that you can participate fully in your studies. If you are experiencing difficulty with your studies, you may seek counselling from the year level or program co-ordinators. If you have a long-term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage, it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Equitable Learning Services (https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services) if you would like to find out more.
