Approach to learning and assessment

This program is organised by four main themes, to reflect the orientation and approach to learning and assessment.

  • In the Professional Human Services theme, you will consider the multidimensional considerations for the role of an individual in providing care, advocacy and protecting the rights of others who may be more vulnerable. The learning experiences are a mix of real-world considerations, analyses and applications of knowledge and skills that enable you as an ethical graduate to feel confident in your efficacy.
  • In the Youth Work theme, there is a strong work integrated learning approach which situates you from early in your enrolment to participation and engagement with the Youth Sector.
  • In the Youth Studies stream, you are situated as inquirer and scholar, enabled to explore research and trends associated with the interdisciplinary constructions and representations of young people.
  • In the Contexts and Breadths stream, you are invited to participate in deep learning in an area of interest, or broaden your schematic understandings through a range of University electives.

This program is offered through a multimodal approach. Many of the courses are available through online and face to face modes, and where possible intensives over University breaks will be offered to enable increased flexibility. Some of the courses also take a blended approach, offering a mix of online and face to face learning experiences to reflect best practices for professional and scholarly engagement. Throughout the course experiences, there is a strong industry presence embedded, often including presentations and materials relevant to the Youth Sector.

Assessments across this program have been well conceived to demonstrate the achievement of learning against Program Learning Outcomes as well as to meet industry expectations for employability. A range of assessment types are used to allow you to evidence your competence and capacity. These include text and policy analysis, data collection in seeking to understand youth phenomenon, planning of projects for implementation in an industry setting, a capstone mini research project and various other pieces of evidence that will contribute to your development of an e-portfolio or digital resume of achievement throughout your program. At least a quarter of the assessments in this program will be benchmarked by or have input from industry in evaluating your work. In most of the courses associated with this program, there is an early assessment piece to allow formative feedback to be provided before immersing you in the substantive assessment tasks with heavier weighting.

If you have a disability, long-term illness and/or mental health condition or are the primary carer of individuals with a disability it is possible to have adjustments arranged and negotiated to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Program Manager or the Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;
  • engage with distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated in a workplace environment. The WIL courses in this program are:

  • HWSS2232 Youth Work 4: Field Education 2 (Working with Industry)
  • HWSS2233 Youth Work 5: Field Education 3 (Working for Industry)

The Field Education courses in this program are largely undertaken in the Youth Sector with related theoretical and skills workshops seminars facilitated at the University, online or in industry settings. Prior to your first placement you will undertake Field Education 1 - Engaging in Industry. This course will focus on skills development and workplace readiness to prepare students for placement within an organisation.

Field Education 2 - Working with Industry provides learners with the opportunity to facilitate a project or specific set of tasks in the workplace, whilst under the direct supervision of a Social and Community Services professional (30 Days Supervised Project). Field Education 3 - Working for Industry challenges the learner to assume increased autonomy and accountability for the roles and functions of a Youth Worker in a Youth related field (30 Days Professional Competence). The Ready for Life and Work course supports the transition from learner to professional in articulating readiness for graduation and employment (Seminar and small group supervision).

Following the completion of both placements, students will undertake Youth Work 6 - Ready for Life and Work. This course is designed to support the transition from learner to professional by developing readiness for graduation and employment (Seminar and small group supervision).

Please note that to undertake the Field Education courses, you must provide a satisfactory Working with Children Check and Police Check. It is a requirement of the Youth Sector to have these clearances.
