Approach to learning and assessment

Over the duration of your program, you will experience a variety of approaches to teaching and learning. The approaches used in each course will be appropriate to the core curriculum areas which are designed to assist you in developing skills as an independent and lifelong learner. The program will achieve these learning and professional outcomes through the consistent and extensive use of updated courseware that has been designed with students’ needs as its central plank.

The major styles of teaching and learning you will experience throughout your program will include, but are not limited to the following:

Classroom teaching: This utilises a range of teaching and learning techniques including lectures, guest lectures by practitioners, class presentations, group discussion and student-led discussion. This style of learning is designed to maximise your understanding of the curriculum content and skills. It is designed to provide an environment where you can ask questions and seek feedback as well as contribute to class discussion with your peers. This program may also make use of online resources, activities and collaborations to enrich your learning experience. It may also require you to complete tasks before attending face to face classes to ensure time is maximized and provides meaningful context for your learning.

Problem-based learning:  You may be in a small group or team, or work individually to apply knowledge to solve problems and examine case studies. This technique is designed to simulate the experiences you will encounter working as a as a professional in industry.

Assignments and projects: These may be either research or problem based, and may be undertaken in teams or individually. They will provide you with experience at undertaking research and reasoning, to write effectively and to present your findings and advice to a range of audiences; and may also require you to provide oral presentations. Assignments and projects are also designed to provide a way to receive feedback on your skills development and be able to utilise this feedback to improve your skills and further develop your capabilities in the relevant area. This program will also have a number of skills and industry relevant micro-credentials embedded into the assessment tasks which will further ensure your readiness for your future career. You will also have access to a further marketplace of micro-credentials which you can curate and personalize your learning journey.

If you have a long term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or the Equitable Learning Services (ELS) if you would like to find out more: https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services

If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (for example, through prior studies or work experience), you can apply for credit once you have enrolled in this program. There is information on the RMIT University website about how to apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) www.rmit.edu.au/students/enrolment/credit/he

Work integrated learning

As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will be provided with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. The designated Work Integrated Learning (WIL) courses in this program are BUSM4730 Digital Business Transformation (12 credit points) and BUSM4195 Leadership (12 credit points). These courses will provide you with opportunities to apply your academic skills to a work-based context.

In particular you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice; and
  • be involved in authentic engagement with partner organisations that includes industry feedback. These learning opportunities may be in the form of industry-based projects, simulations or placements.

As well as more structured Work Integrated Learning in the curriculum, this program will expand boundaries by developing skillsets and mindsets required for a future world of work. This will be done by ensuring that content is connected strongly to industry needs and reflective of the changing workplace and that skills are developed and recognised through the use of digital credentials which are continually updated to meet industry demand and need. This provides a graduate of this program with a strong evidence of their knowledge and skills when seeking work.
