Approach to learning and assessment

This single unit course, along with all learning materials and assessments, has been developed by the Department of Education and Training in response to industry need.

This program will be delivered face-to-face and online to provide for a blended learning experience. This approach has been developed for cohorts who are employed in a universal services role and  who would benefit from accredited training to support their existing qualification/s or experience.

Learning content and activities have been developed to prepare learners to undertake the assessment tasks. Learners are given direct instruction and  content through digital resources provided to support a flipped learning approach.

Learners will complete self-paced online learning materials and attend city campus-based workshops where application of knowledge will be discussed and skills will be practised.

Learning and assessment will use a range of methods including:

  • classes on the City Campus and online that are designed to provide maximum class interaction, discussion and development of ideas and skills
  • extensive online resources and support of both the content areas and the study skills to support learning
  • assessment that is designed to prepare you for work-ready performance and/or further study

If you have a long-term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Program Coordinator or the Equitable Learning Service Unit (https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services) if you would like to find out more.

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts and simulations.

Program inherent requirements
Inherent requirements refer to the abilities, knowledge and skills you must demonstrate to:

  • achieve program learning outcomes
  • work effectively as part of a team in the classroom
  • perform effectively in classroom without undue risk to your own or others' health, safety and welfare.

Depending on your program of study, inherent requirements may include:

  • verbal and non-verbal communication skills
  • reading, writing and number skills
  • concentration, memory and problem solving
  • mental wellness and behavioural stability
  • vision, hearing, touch and smell
  • physical skills, such as gross and fine motor skills.

If you have any injury, illness, disability, impairment, condition or incapacity that may affect your ability to perform the inherent requirements of your program of study, we encourage you to discuss this with the Program manager to enable RMIT University to identify whether there are any reasonable adjustments that would enable you to perform program requirements. RMIT University wants to place you in the best possible position to use your knowledge, skills and attributes effectively in your program of study.

Further learning and assessment activities will involve presentations during class time by industry practitioners relating the specific services they deliver to clients groups and communities and the underpinning knowledge and skills relating to their practice.
