Purpose of the Program

This qualification provides you with the competencies to be able to select, install, set up, test, find fault, repair and maintain electrical systems and equipment in buildings and premises.

The program includes ERAC requirements for an 'Electrician's Licence'.

You will gain the following knowledge and skills:

  • participate in electrical work and competency development activities to identify workplace hazards and risks and document control measures;

  • apply to your work functions environmentally and sustainable energy procedures;

  • fixing and securing electrotechnology equipment;

  • fabrication, dismantling and assembling of utilities industry components;

  • use drawings, diagrams, cable schedules, standards, codes and specifications;

  • terminate cables, cords and accessories for low voltage circuits;

  • solve problems in d.c.  and a.c.circuits and single & three phase low voltage machines;

  • arrange circuits, control and protection for general electrical installations;

  • select wiring systems and cables for low voltage general electrical installations;

  • troubleshoot and repair faults in low voltage electrical apparatus and circuits;

  • develop and connect electrical control circuits;

  • install low voltage wiring and accessories;

  • install appliances, switchgear and associated accessories for low voltage electrical installations;

  • verify compliance and functionality of low voltage general electrical installations.

Articulation and pathways

Completion of this qualification, with the appropriate elective units, can provide credit towards a Certificate IV in Electrotechnology  Systems Electrician and/or Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering.

This certificate is based on the qualifications contained in the Electrotechnology Training Package UEE07.

Graduates of this program currently select, install, set up, test, fault find, repair and maintain electrical systems and equipment in building and premises.

Students enter as apprentices.

Entrance requirements

Students must be an Apprentice under the Australian Apprenticeship Scheme (AAS), be employed in the industry, and be registered with an Australian Apprenticeship Centre (AAC) prior to enrolment or be employed in the electrical industry.

External accreditation and industry links

Successful completion of this qualification allows students to either apply for an Electrician’s licence through Energy Safe Victoria (ESV) or to apply for Open Cabler Registration licence endorsed by Australian Communications and Media Authority's (ACMA). Registration fees apply payable to the licencing body.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
