Approach to learning and assessment
As an apprentice, you will attend the workplace for 3 or 4 years depending on the number of plumbing streams your employer has signed you on for. During this period of time, you will be released by your employer in blocks of one week (5 days) several times over the years to attend RMIT city campus for training.
The rest of the days during this 3 or 4 year period, you work as an apprentice with your employer to gain practical experience at the worksite.
It is expected that during these years, you are released to attend RMIT 9 times a year in stage 1, 9 times in stage 2, 5 times in stage 3, and if you are signed up to do stage 4, 6 times during 4th year.
Assessments at RMIT will closely simulate tasks which are done in the plumbing industry and most tasks need to be demonstrated to your assessor.
If you have a long term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage, it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program manager for plumbing, or the RMIT Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.

Work integrated learning
RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience. As an apprentice enrolled in this RMIT University program, you will be assessed by a qualified assessor on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate vocational competency which closely simulate workplace scenarios in the plumbing sector.
You will be learning while at work as an apprentice. You may also have the opportunity to be assessed by a qualified assessor in your workplace for some or all of your units of competencies. Feedback from work supervisors and others in the workplace can also be used to assist the assessor in determining your competency.
Program Structure
Program transition plan
If you are enrolled in the CPC32413 Certificate III in Plumbing, you are expected to complete 3 stages within 3 years, or 4 stages within 4 years.
If this qualification becomes superseded within 3 years or 4 years of you commencing, you will continue in this program or be transferred to the replacement program and you will not be disadvantaged. If you take longer to complete this program, you may need to undergo extra training and/or assessment if the replacement qualification is significantly different from this one.
