Approach to learning and assessment

Assessment will take place on-the-job and off-the-job. Assessment of individual competencies is holistic in nature and is co-assessed with other units within your program through the projects you undertake.

A range of assessment methods will be used to assess practical skills and knowledge, including:

  • direct questioning combined with practical projects
  • review of portfolios of evidence and
  • third party workplace reports of on-the-job performance.

Learning is practical in nature, involving the production of various furniture products. Underpinning knowledge and skills is learnt through demonstrations and theoretical exercises.

If you have a long term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You may contact the program coordinator or the Disability Liaison Unit if you would like to find out more.

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links
formal learning with workplace experience. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University
program you will be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and
demonstrate vocational competency.
If you are working, particularly in a job which is related to your studies you will also be
learning while at work and may have the opportunity to be assessed in your workplace for
some or all of your courses. Feedback from work supervisors and others in the workplace
can be used as evidence of competency, and an RMIT University assessor can visit your
workplace to observe your work practice.
