Approach to learning and assessment
The program combines on the job training in your workplace, and face to face learning at the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne in Carlton. The educators from RMIT University liaise closely with your workplace supervisors to facilitate training that meets your individual learning needs.
The program is delivered through:
- on-the-job training
- online learning of theory-based courses
- hands-on practical-based workshops
- online learning resources
During your studies you will need to complete two workplace assessments conducted at the workplace. You will also be expected to demonstrate competency on the practical component of the program and complete a Clinical Logbook.

Please note that this program’s courses (whether core, option, or university elective courses) may have mandatory in-person attendance or assessment to pass the course.
If you are choosing to enrol in a course which has mandatory in-person attendance or assessment, you will need to comply with RMIT vaccination requirements which are applicable during the duration of the course. This RMIT requirement includes being vaccinated against COVID-19 or holding a valid medical exemption.

Work integrated learning
This program is a traineeships program and cannot be undertaken unless you are employed and registered as a trainee dental assistant under a training agreement with an appropriate dental industry employer in either a public or private dental practise. This program provides work related projects in the learning activities and assessment.

Program Structure
Program transition plan
To ensure training packages are responsive to industry priorities for new and updated skills, they are monitored and reviewed during their endorsement period. Sometimes the outcome of a review is that a qualification is superseded by a new version of the qualification, or a new qualification altogether. The school will endeavour to the best of their abilities to ensure that students are not disadvantaged in this process.
The program is currently in transition. Applications will still be accepted into the current program and where required students will be transitioned into the updated program in semester 1 2022.
