Purpose of the Program

The Certificate III in EAL (Further Study) is part of an academic preparation program at RMIT University. It is for people from non-English speaking backgrounds who wish to improve their speaking, listening, reading, writing and further study skills. The program aims to provide learners with the cultural understanding, advanced English language, and tertiary study skills to participate in further study contexts. This certificate is offered in Semester 1 and in Semester 2.

Articulation and pathways

Pathways refer to related programs students may be eligible to progress to once they have graduated from this program.

Possible pathways include:

  • Certificate IV in EAL (Further Study)
  • VE or Higher Education programs offered at RMIT or other institutions
  • employment

As part of this program, learners will undertake weekly workshops which focus on supporting them with further study, employment and pathway goals.

Entrance requirements

This certificate is for people 16 years (on 1 January in year of commencement) and over who come from a non-English speaking background and want to improve their English, or who have had an interrupted education and/or want to develop further study skills.

Entry into this qualification must be determined according to the following criteria:

  • a participant’s current English language skills. (the Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing units in the Framework will provide the basis for initial assessment processes and placement of participants at the appropriate proficiency level)*
  • a participant’s prior formal education experience, both overseas and in Australia
  • any prior EAL learning
  • a participant’s learning and pathway needs including employability skills, literacies (digital and other literacies), and further educational and vocational training needs.

All of the above criteria are assessed for each applicant at an interivew to ensure that they are correctly placed into the appropriate EAL certificate level.

*As a general guide to entry in this program, learners should have literacy skills to a minimum exit Level 2 of the Australian Core Skills Framework (ACSF).

External accreditation and industry links

This nationally accredited curriculum is designed for adults learning English as an additional language.

The curriculum is owned by the Department of Education and Training (Higher Education and Skills Group). Ongoing monitoring and maintenance of this qualification is managed by the Service Industries Curriculum Maintenance Manager, General Studies and Further Education. A formal review will take place once during the period of accreditation and will be informed by feedback from users of the curriculum. 

Industry links are maintained through the Tertiary Preparation Industry Advisory Committee (IAC). This committee considers and informs this program on matters associated with development, delivery and assessment. The program is also a member of Victorian EAL Curriculum Advisory Committee (CAG).

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

There are no set texts in this course, but it is recommended that students bring:

  • English-English dictionary
  • Display folder with plastic sleeves
  • Highlighter pens
  • Notebook or loose leaf paper
  • Headphones 
  • USB

Library resources and services
Students enrolled in a program at RMIT University have access to extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. Students can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, newspapers and e-books. Through the document delivery service students can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site as well as many of RMITs computer labs, where students can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If students have a laptop they can access the RMIT University wireless network throughout RMIT.

Library staff can support students on how to find information for assignments or students can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding its electronic collections to make it easier for students to get the information they need when they need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
