Purpose of the Program
This is a trade qualification for plumbers in residential, industrial and commercial workplaces who are responsible for assembling, installing and maintaining water services, sanitary plumbing and sanitary drainage, gas, roofing and mechanical services in both existing and new constructions.
Occupational titles could include:
- Plumber
- Plumber and drainer
- Plumber and gasfitter
- Gasfitter
- Roof plumber
- Mechanical services plumber.
This is a licenced occupation. State and territory jurisdictions may have different licensing, legislative, regulatory or certification requirements. Relevant state and territory regulatory authorities should be consulted to confirm those requirements.
This qualification is suitable for an Australian Apprenticeship pathway.

Students may continue their studies in the 'CPC40920 Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services'. Completing the Certificate IV in Plumbing and Services prepares them to obtain a plumbing licence through the VBA. Students must be employed in the construction industry with a suitable employer and signed into a plumbing apprenticeship.
This program is delivered as an apprenticeship. To enrol in this program as an apprentice you should:
- Make contact with Australian Apprenticeship Support Network who can explain Apprenticeships and assist with finding employment as an apprentice.
- Sign a training contract with your employer and the Apprenticeship Network provider
- Nominate RMIT as your preferred Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
You will be contacted by RMIT after we are notified by the Apprenticeship Network to organise your enrolment.

External accreditation and industry links
On successful completion of this program, you will be eligible to receive the nationally endorsed 'CPC32420 - Certificate lll in Plumbing' qualification.
The unit selection meets the packaging rules of the training package and the VBA registration / gazetted units for General Plumbing – Roofing and Mechanical. on completion of the program, you are able to apply to the VBA to sit the registration exam to become a Registered Plumber in General Plumbing - Roofing and/or Menchnical.

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
