Approach to learning and assessment
As an apprentice, you will attend the workplace for 3 or 4 years depending on the number of plumbing streams your employer has signed you on for. During this period of time, you will be released by your employer in blocks of one week (5 days) several times over the years to attend RMIT city campus for training. The rest of the days during this 3 or 4 year period, you work as an apprentice with your employer to gain practical experience at the worksite.
It is expected that during these years, you are released to attend RMIT 9 times a year in stage 1, 8 times in stage 2, 5 times in stage 3, and if you are signed up to do stage 4, 7 times during 4th year. Assessments at RMIT will closely simulate tasks which are done in the plumbing industry and most tasks need to be demonstrated to your assessor.

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience. As an apprentice enrolled in this RMIT University program, you will be assessed by a qualified assessor on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate vocational competency which closely simulate workplace scenarios in the plumbing sector. You will be learning while at work as an apprentice.Feedback from work supervisors and others in the workplace can also be used to assist the assessor in determining your competency.
