Approach to learning and assessment

To complete the requirements for the Certificate IV in Education Support, you will be required to successfully complete 12 Core Units and 5 Elective units.

Classes are timetabled over 3 days plus 1 day of compulsory workplacement and 1 day of unsupervised directed study time. Your workplacement and unsupervised directed study are an integral part of your learning and assessment for the program. Classes are interactive and give you many opportunities to discuss, share ideas and practice new skills. You will participate in class learning activities such as analysing case studies and scenarios, role plays, group and pair work, online research and reading articles. The work and tasks you complete during the program will focus on the teaching and learning of young people. Some of the units will be clustered as part of your learning and assessment.

Your assessments will be on-going through the program.

Assessment may include:

  •     question and answer written tasks
  •     oral tasks
  •     group work
  •     projects
  •     online tasks
  •     workbased assessment through demonstration and observation

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;

and in addition:

  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

You will participate in compulsory workplacement (minimum 100hrs) in a regulated educational organisation to gain on the job experience. You will be supported in organising your workplacement by the RMIT workplacement coordinator and relevant teachers. You will be required to complete relevant workplacement documentation e.g. Work Integrated Learning (WIL) agreements, schedules and Working with Children's Check (WWCC) documentation before you commence your workplacement. Your workplacement facilitator and relevant teachers will assist you with the documentation at the commencement of the program.

Many of your units require assessment in the workplace: e.g. CHCECE006 Support behaviour of children and young people, CHCEDS001 Comply with Legislative, Policy & Industrial Requirements in Education Environment, CHCEDS021 Assist Facilitation of Student Learning, CHCEDS022 Work with Students in Need of Support, CHCEDS024 Use Education Strategies to Support Aboriginal &/or Torres Strait Islander Education, CHCEDS025 Facilitate Learning for Student with DisabilitiesCHCEDS032 Support learning and implement Response Behaviour, CHCPRT001 Respond to Children & Young People at Risk, HLTWHS001 Participate in Workplace Health & Safety,  CHCPRP003 Reflect and Improve own professional practice, CHCDIV001 Work with Diverse people, CHCDIV002 Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander cultural safety, BSBWOR203 Work effectviely with others and CHCEDS023 Supervise students outside the classroom. 

If you are working, particularly in a job which is related to your studies you will also be learning while at work and have the opportunity to be assessed in your workplace for some of your Units. Feedback from work supervisors and others in the workplace can be used as evidence for assessment of competence, and an RMIT University assessor can visit your workplace to observe and assess your work practice and competence.

Program transition plan

C4349 Certificate IV in Education Support (CHC40213) is superseded on 20th January 2023. If you did not fully complete this program before this date you will transition into the CHC40221 Certificate IV in School based Education Support. The programs are not equivalent and there are additional units and requirements in this program. You may need to take additional study and enrol in new units and you may incur additional fees. You will work with your Program Coordinator and Manager to assist your transition.
