Approach to learning and assessment
Please note that this program’s courses (whether core, option, or university elective courses) may have mandatory in-person attendance or assessment to pass the course.
If you are choosing to enrol in a course which has mandatory in-person attendance or assessment, you will need to comply with RMIT vaccination requirements which are applicable during the duration of the course. This RMIT requirement includes being vaccinated against COVID-19 or holding a valid medical exemption.
Please read this RMIT Enrolment Procedure as it has important information regarding COVID vaccination and your study at RMIT: https://policies.rmit.edu.au/document/view.php?id=209.
Please read the Student website for additional requirements of in-person attendance: https://www.rmit.edu.au/covid/coming-to-campus
Most of the learning and assessment involves practical activities in the form of projects, briefs, folios that will be produced in a workshop, studio or computer lab. Other activities involve oral and visual presentation of project outcomes and/or research, essays and reports.
Assessment occurs throughout, and at the completion of the units. You may receive oral or written feedback. All units are assessed for competency.
You will develop skills in, and knowledge of, the design fundamentals, resulting in practical, industry-style outcomes. You will study drawing, illustration, 2D and 3D design, colour studies, and history and theory of design. You will acquire knowledge about the design industry and health and safety.
If you have a long term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact Equitable Learning Services https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services
In the Certificate IV in Design, the following units have been clustered to enhance the student learning experience:
BSBCRT301 Develop and extend critical and creative thinking skills
+BSBDES401 Generate design solutions
CUAILL401 Develop and refine illustrative work
+CUAACD401 Integrate colour theory and design processes
BSBDES302 Explore and apply the creative design process to 2D forms
+CUADIG405 Produce innovative digital images
+CUAGRD302 Use typography techniques
+CUAGRD401 Research and apply graphic design techniques
BSBDES303 Explore and apply the creative design process to 3D forms
+BSBWHS201 Contribute to health and safety of self and others
The approach to learning and assessment for this program will include both supervised and non-supervised forms of training delivery.
Supervised training is teacher directed learning and assessment activities. This includes:
- Work placements which are mandatory requirements of assessment.
- Structured online learning activities where there is real time access to your teachers e.g. online lectures, teacher led discussions and online activities.
- Face-to-face learning e.g. tutorials, lectures, scheduled classes.
- Assessment tasks.
The supervised hours in this program are: 560
You will also need to work independently, this includes:
- Independent study activities such as research, reading, practical and/or theoretical practice tests or assessments.
Work integrated learning
RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT program you will:
- undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
- interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
- complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;
and in addition:
- these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.
Any or all of these aspects of a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience may be simulated.
If you are working, particularly in a job which is related to your studies you will also be learning while at work and may have the opportunity to be assessed in your workplace for some or all of your courses. Feedback from work supervisors and others in the workplace can be used as evidence for assessment of competence, and an RMIT University assessor can visit your workplace to observe and assess your work practice and competence.
Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated.
The designated WIL course for this program is BSBDES402 Interpret and respond to a design brief. In this course you will complete a brief that is developed by industry. Industry will also provide feedback on the progress and outcome of the brief in conjunction with your teacher.
