Purpose of the Program

The program has been designed to benefit Dental Assistants who have successfully completed their Certificate III in Dental Assisting and  this Certificate IV qualification from the National Training Package will provide you with the underpinning knowledge and practical skills required to safely, and effectively, perform the entry level roles and responsibilities of a Dental Assistant in the areas of Dental Radiography,

The program combines both campus based training and training in the workplace. Your RMIT University teaching staff will liaise closely with your workplace supervisors to facilitate the training tto meet your individual learning needs.

The program is delivered through a blended learning approach of;

  • face to face classroom theory based subjects
  • face to face practical sessions
  • on the job training
  • online learning activities   

Please note:This program cannot be undertaken unless you are employed as dental assistant with appropriate employment in either a public or private dental practise.

Articulation and pathways

There is no specific program to pathway into however you may be eligible for credit into other RMIT University programs for successfully completing this program upon application to other RMIT University programs. Please check with admissions officer of your program of choice.

Entrance requirements

Applicants must be currently employed and have successfully completed the HLT35015 Certificate III in Dental Assisting and supported by a dental practice throughout the duration of the program.

In addition you must have good communication skills, be computer literate and hold a current level 2 first aid program (HLTAID003 Provide Frist Aid) at the commencement of the program.

Recognition of prior learning (RPL) will be required for any prospective student who do not have the HLT35015 Certificate III in Dental Assisting qualification.

RPL assessment will include an assessment of your skills in line with the outcomes listed in HLT35015 Certificate III Dental Assisting competency units and may high light any required gap training.

External accreditation and industry links

The Certificate IV in Dental Assisting is a nationally endorsed an recognised training qualification that is supported and underpinned by the National Health Training Package.

RMIT University and the School of Vocational Engineering Health and Sciences, through its program advisory committees, consults with industry directly around all aspects of the program. RMIT has been at the forefront of Dental Assisting training and education for over 20 years and has built up an extensive network of industry links.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Please note your fees will be calculated on the amount of credit applied from your Certificate III qualification and the number of units of competency you will be undertaking, please check with your program coordinator on enrolment.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT(https://my.rmit.edu.au/portal/myStudies) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop or iPad you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library.

Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
