Statement on competency-based trainingEmployability Skills
Statement on competency-based training
This nationally recognised Vocational Education and Training (VET) qualification delivers competency-based training and assessment, which is designed to develop the skills and knowledge (competency) needed to perform in the work you are training for. Competency-based assessment allows you to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to safely and consistently complete workplace activities at the standard required by the job and in a range of situations and environments.
If you are being assessed in the workplace, your work supervisor may provide the assessor with a report on the skills and knowledge you have demonstrated.
If you have already developed areas of skill and knowledge included in this program (e.g. through prior paid or voluntary work experience), you can be assessed and have these skills and knowledge formally recognised at any point during the program. This process is called Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). There is information on the RMIT website about how to apply for RPL- refer to https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/student-essentials/enrolment/apply-for-credit

Employability Skills
In addition to developing the skills and knowledge required for a particular area of work, this program also aims to help you to develop broad work skills, known as Employability Skills. There are eight employability skills:
- communication
- teamwork
- problem solving
- initiative and enterprise
- planning and organising
- self-management
- learning
- technology
Employability skills are “embedded” in the units of competency in your program. When you demonstrate that you are competent in your particular job skills and knowledge, you are also demonstrating that you have developed relevant employability skills. More information around Employability Skills can be provided by your teacher.
Some units in your program may come from a national Training Package and is so, may also contain Foundation Skills, which are specific to each unit of competency and form part of the requirements for competency. When you demonstrate that you are competent in the job skills and knowledge, you are also demonstrating that you have developed the relevant Foundation Skills. Further information about the foundation skills you will develop in these units is available at http://companion_volumes.vetnet.education.gov.au/Pages/TrainingPackage.aspx?pid=7.
