Program Information

The structure of the Certificate IV in Custom-made Footwear has been developed to ensure the program is being delivered following industry guidelines and requirements.

Classes are interactive and give you many opportunities to discuss ideas and practice new skills. You will participate in class learning activities such as:

  • Practical workshops in the development of footwear products including shoes 
  • Design folios
  • Specifications
  • Patterns
  • Simulated workplace activities including quality/production management
  • Raw materials properties
  • Computer-aided tasks within a footwear industry context

Some activities may be done on an individual basis and some require group work, on-line interaction, learning and assessment.There is an expectation that you will complete assessment projects outside of class time.
 
Assessment occurs throughout the program and includes:

  • Practical demonstrations of competency, for example by completing tasks while being observed by your teacher
  • Completion of written work such as writing assessment reports, assignments and development of a design folio
  • Completion of practical work such as through the development of a range of different shoe styles

All units are assessed for competency. If you have already developed competency through prior experience, you may apply for RPL before the program commences or at any time during the program for each of the courses you are about to commence. Please discuss this process with your teacher or Program Coordinator.

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience.  As a student enrolled in this RMIT program you will:

  • Undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and  demonstrate your professional or vocational practice
  • Interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities
  • Complete these activities in a real or simulated work contexts or situations

Examples of these activities include:

You are encouraged to participate in footwear and fashion related design competitions. You will also engage with industry representatives at trade and fashion shows, listen to guest speakers from industry and speak to wholesalers and suppliers to footwear related companies, either at the university or during excursions. In addition,you will be involve in projects initiated by the footwear industry.

The Work Integrated Learning (WIL) nominated unit in this program is MSTFP4004 Assemble and Finish custom made shoe.
