Purpose of the Program

This program has a technical skills focus, preparing you for work in a range of laboratories. The Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques provides a broad and flexible package of competencies which meet the needs of laboratory assistants & laboratory technicians and similar personnel.

It will provide you with a guarenteed pathway into the Diploma of Laboratory Technology or the Associate Degree in Applied Science.

Articulation and pathways

Students who satisfactorily complete the Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques C4397 have guaranteed entry to the Diploma of Laboratory Technology C5388 or the Associate Degree in Applied Science AD012.

Students who satisfactorily complete the Diploma of Laboratory Technology C5388 have  guaranteed entry with credit to the following degrees:

BP231P10 Bachelor of Biomedical Science
BP147P12A Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Laboratory Medicine)
BP311 Bachelor of Pharmaceutical Sciences
BP229 Bachelor of Science (Biological Sciences)
BP226P7 Bachelor of Science (Biotechnology)

Entrance requirements

There are no specific entry requirements as per the Training Package rules, however preference is given to applicants who have studied Chemistry or Biology in their final year of high school or who have completed a bridging science program such as Certificate III in Science.

This is based on the experience of students who have not previously studied science subjects struggling with the requirements of the competencies.

There is automatic entry to this program for RMIT graduates of Certificate IV in Tertiary Preparation and Certificate III in Science.

International students- Study at Year 12 or foundation studies level (Science stream) or evidence of completion of post-secondary study. Relevant work experience will also be considered
English Requirement: IELTS 5.5 (No band less than 5.0) or equivalent

External accreditation and industry links

The Certificate IV in Laboratory Techniques has  no external accreditations but the program has strong links with industry (including private and hospital pathology laboratories, biotechnology and research laboratories) through the student workplacement scheme in the Diploma of Laboratory Technology, regular student/staff visits to laboratories and the Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) .

Laboratories also often seek RMIT staff assistance when technician positions become available.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Resources available from the Library

As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.

Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT http://www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT wireless network in the Library. Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online 'Ask a Librarian' service.

The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals, newspapers and databases.

There are also specific subject guides available on the library website that will point you to a variety of resources available in the Library and those available online. Guides that you may find useful include Biomedical Science, Biotechnology & Biological Sciences, Human Anatomy & Physiology and Laboratory Medicine.

Computer laboratories with printing facilities are available in the School for students to use at any time that classes are not scheduled. 

There are a number of specialised simulated workplace laboratories that you will be trained to work in. These include:

Chemistry Laboratory which has, in addition to routine equipment, a Touch Screen Analyser to perform "Point of Care" blood testing, the latest development in clinical diagnostic testing and an Autoanalyser that can perform a wide range of biochemical tests.

PC2 Containment Laboratory that is used for all of your microbiology, tissue culture and molecular biology laboratory work. It is equipped with two Biosafety cabinets, equipment for the isolation, purification and manipulation of DNA in addition to routine microbiology equipment. There is also a new digital fluorescence imaging system for examination of a wide range of cells and tissues. This lab also has industry standard equipment used in Histology, Haematology & Blood banking laboratories.
