Approach to learning and assessment

The certificate aims to help you develop self-confidence and self-awareness, the ability to think critically and creatively as well as enhance independence given that you may have interrupted studies or may have not studied for a number of years.The learning and assessment approach recognises the need for you to adopt a positive and self-directive attitude towards study and to acquire the time management and study skills necessary to successfully cope with tertiary study. Learning these skills will be embedded in your program. 

Each unit you will study is called a Unit of Competency. These make up your program and the corresponding Elements and Performance Criteria that make up each unit can be found online on Canvas (RMIT's Learning Management System). Course guides are available for each unit/subject. It is most important that you access these for information and guidelines about the delivery structure, assessment dates and requirements.

Various strategies will be implemented in the classroom to engage you with your learning;  whether it be interactive activities, group-based discussions, problem solving or research based activities, and your engagement is paramount. To get the most out of your studies and the services at RMIT, we include induction activities at the beginning of your program to introduce you to the university, CANVAS (online learning management system), learning resources,support services, and social and sporting activities.

In the Business electives, a range of learning activities will introduce you to the principles of Business and Business skills. Teachers deliver the training so as to actively engage you in your learning and your full participation in all simulated work activities. Learning is divided into classroom activities, online learning and project-based work. The learning and assessment approach recognises the need for you to adopt a positive and self-directive attitude towards study and to acquire the time management and study skills necessary to successfully cope with tertiary study.

This program will be delivered using a blended approach; face-to-face classes and online, synchronous classes. It is strongly advised that students attend most sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to successfully complete this course. As well as this, students will be requied to complete Directed Study activities which are done outside the class. 

The timetabled blended teaching is 18 hours per week (across 4 days). As well as this, learners will have approximately 12 hours of Directed Study each week which includes independent study activiteis such as research, reading and other tasks designed to develop your skills. 

 Assessment measures competence, and because of the different types of courses, assessment may take different forms, such as:

  • Tests/Exams: An individual form of assessment where you have the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to explain fundamental principles and solve problems
  • Assignmens/Essay and Report Writing: May be done individually or in groups. This method may also be used to enable you to demonstrate your ability to work alone or as a member of a team.
  • Assessed tutorials: A form of in-class test, which may be done individually or as a team.
  • Simulated activities: undertake activities that mirror the workplace
  • Practical assessments 
  • Oral presentations

The assessment you receive will enable your lecturers to provide you with feedback on the strengths and weaknesses of your work.  This will enable you to improve your study skills and develop as a lifelong learner.

Evidence is collected through both in-class activities and out-of-class activities (Self Directed Study).

In order to support articulated pathways from this certificate into other RMIT Programs, the program will use the following grade table for all units of competency;

  • CA Competency achieved
  • NYC Not yet competent
  • DNS Did not submit for assessment
