Approach to learning and assessment

This certificate aims to help you develop self-confidence and self-awareness, the ability to think critically and creatively as well as enhance independence given that you may have interrupted studies or may have not studied for a number of years. Learning these skills will be embedded in your program.

Each unit/subject you will study is called a Unit of Competency. These make up your program and the corresponding Elements and Performance Criteria that make up each unit can be found online on Canvas (RMIT's Student Learning Management Systme). Course guides are available for each unit. It is most important that you access these for information and guidelines about the delivery structure, assessment dates and other requirements.

Various strategies will be implemented in the classroom to engage you with your learning;  whether it be interactive activities, group-based discussions, problem solving or research based activities, and your engagement is paramount. To get the most out of your studies and the services at RMIT, we include induction activities at the beginning of your program to introduce you to the university, Canvas, learning resources, support services, and social and sporting activities.

In the Science stream, a range of electives delivered in a supportive learning environment will introduce you to the principles of science and science skills. Teachers deliver the training so as to actively engage you in your learning and to allow you to participate fully in all simulated work activities. Learning is divided into classroom activities, online learning and project based work. The learning and assessment approach recognises the need for you to adopt a positive and self-directive attitude towards study and to acquire the time management and study skills necessary to successfully cope with tertiary study. Learning these skills will be embedded in your program.

This program will be delivered using a blended approach; face-to-face classes and online, synchronous classes. It is strongly advised that students attend most sessions in order to engage in the required learning activities, ensuring the maximum opportunity to successfully complete this program.

The timetabled blended teaching is 18.5-20 hours per week, depending on the electives selected, and classes are timetabled across 5 days a week.  As well as this, learners will have approximately 9 hours of Directed Study each week which is completed outside the timetabled classes and includes independent study activities such as research, reading and other tasks designed to develop your skills as well as the completion of assessment tasks.

Assessment

Assessment measures competence, and because of the different types of courses, assessment may take different forms, such as:

  • Assignments and Report Writing: May be done individually or in groups. This method may also be used to enable you to demonstrate your ability to work alone or as a member of a team.
  • Assessed tutorials: A form of in-class test, which may be done individually or as a team.
  • Laboratory reports: Provide an exercise in experimentation, report writing and critical analysis and presentation of data.
  • Oral Presentations
  • Tests/Exams : An individual form of assessment where you have the opportunity to demonstrate your ability to explain fundamental principles and solve problems.

The assessment you receive will enable your teachers to provide you with feedback on your strengths and weaknesses.  Assessment will take place throughout the program. All the Units of Competency use the following system for marking assessments:

CA - Competency achieved

NYC  - Not yet competent

DNS  - Did not submit for assessment

myRMIT Studies

You will utilise the myRMIT Studies Learning Management System to access links to useful websites, program information and templates, readings and exercises to support your studies.

The Delivery mode for this program is face to face classes with directed study to be completed outside of class.

The approach to learning and assessment for this program will include both supervised and non-supervised forms of training delivery.
Supervised training describes structured learning and assessment activities that are directed by teachers/trainers. These can include:

  • Structured online learning activities where there is real time access to your teachers e.g. teacher led discussions and online activities which are assessed or monitored by teachers.
  • Face-to-face learning e.g. scheduled classes, tutorials
  • Assessment tasks.

Non-supervised training describes learner-directed/self-paced learning activities. These can include learner directed study activities such as research, reading, practical and/or theoretical practice tests or assessments.

The number of non-supervised hours in a program will vary, depending on the learner.

If you have a long term medical condition, disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the Program Coordinator or the Equitable Learning Service Unit (https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services) if you would like to find out more.

Recognition of Prior Learning/RCC/Credit Transfer

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Recognition of Current Competency (RCC) and/or Credit Transfer may be available depending on your previous work and life experiences, formal, informal or non formal learning, completed accredited qualification/s and/or completed units. Please discuss this with the Program Coordinator.
