Purpose of the Program

The program is designed to prepare you for transition into employment in entry level Screen and Media roles particularly in outside broadcast, and live event streaming, and/or further education. This program has been designed specifically to suit people who may have limited pre-existing knowledge and have an interest in TV production, camera operation, video editing, e-sport / gaming, film making.

The areas of learning students undertake include:

  • Single Camera operation
  • Studio Production skills including skill shortage areas of EVS and CCU operation.
  • Post-production
  • Remote and virtual productions
  • Sound recording
  • Studio lighting
  • Visual effects
  • Work health and safety
  • Industry knowledge

There is a strong emphasis on the practical application of learning through collaborative projects, productions and activities that incorporate the skills and knowledge requirements of each course. Students will be involved with multiple production teams across the duration of the program, with each team member having the opportunity to take on all key roles in the production process. 

Delivery is primarily in studio and computer lab-based environments. Students will use a variety of current industry standard equipment and technologies including the Media Precinct and vMix ‘Cloud Studio‘ 

Current pre employment opportunities are being provided by ABC News Operations, ABC Television Operations, Channel 9 News Operations, NEP, MKTG, Pacific Broadcast, JAM TV, Ticker News, Fortress Melbourne, and Gravity Media. Recent employers include Fortress Melbourne, Ticker News, MKTG, Sportscast Australia, Ericsson, Telstra, AFL sport and Crown Bet.

Graduates of the program are being sought by  companies for work in a range of roles that include: Media exchange, Studio operator, EVS operator, CCU operator, Production assistant, Audio assistant, Producer, Captioner, Specialty Camera Operator, runner. 

Additionally, students who have successfully completed the program will be eligible to undertake further studies in the Diploma of Screen and Media or Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services.

Entrance requirements

You must attend an interview.

Interviews will be held in October (VTAC Early round) and December (VTAC main round). For all subsequent rounds and direct applicants, interviews will be arranged after you have submitted your application.

External accreditation and industry links

In Australia there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit programs in Screen and Media. However, this program is strongly supported by representatives from key industry areas. Course content and assessment is informed by industry through the Industry Advisory Committee. The teachers in the program are all practitioners with current knowledge of trends and work practices. The industry experience you gain through your study will help you to establish industry links, in a range of areas across the Screen and Media industry.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library, IT and specialist resources

Library resources and services

As a student enrolled at RMIT University you can use all the services provided by the Library.
