Approach to learning and assessment
This qualification will focus on selection and application of colour, soft furnishings, materials and finishes for both decoration and styling. In addition training is offered in a range of drawing and presentation techniques and their appropriate applications.
Your learning and assessments are designed to develop an understanding of the essential concepts that support decorating and styling skills. With the focus on integrated learning and a workplace approach to communication and presentation of ideas to clients.
Underpinning knowledge of decoration and styling concepts is developed throughout the program.
Smaller practical industry-based assignments gradually expand to embrace simulated decoration and styling Studio style project delivery which echoes industry practice. This will prepare you for employment in the decoration and styling field specifically for the domestic market place.
You will be encouraged to develop a solution-based approach to client briefs. As well, you will be trained in professional standards and consultative models.
Decoration concept development is delivered to support the application of design principles and elements, with examples drawn from historical and contextualised references to ensure you acquire an extended repertoire of imagery, design motif, and reference.
Successful completion of this program requires you to demonstrate that you are competent in 17 units of competency.

MSFID4016 Design colour schemes for interior and exterior spaces
MSFID4015 Prepare a materials board for client presentation
Cluster 2 Decoration Studio
MSFID4012 Decorate residential interiors
MSFID4017 Research & recommend furniture & accessories
Cluster 3: Interior Styling (codelivery)
SIRRMER007 Design and install visual merchandising displays.
MSFGN3006 Estimate and cost a job.
Approaches to learning include project based learning, site visits, industry-based projects, lectures, tutorials, guest speakers and online delivery. The program is delivered flexibly through a mix of online facilitated teaching and face-to-face delivery at the City Campus.
Students are assessed in a variety of ways including:
- concept presentations
- research based projects
- minor and major projects
- visual journals
- oral and visual presentations
You will also need to work independently, this includes:
- Independent study activities such as research, reading, practical and/or theoretical practice tests or assessments.

If you are working, particularly in a job which is related to your studies you will also be learning while at work and may have the opportunity to be assessed in your workplace for some or all of your courses. Feedback from work supervisors and others in the workplace can be used as evidence for assessment of competence, and an RMIT University assessor can visit your workplace to observe and assess your work practice and competence.
Guest speakers from industry inform and educate on specific topics throughout the program. Site visits to showrooms, suppliers and manufacturers provide opportunities to research and learn in industry.
In this course students are given a brief which has been developed by practitioners from industry. Students prepare a design response to the brief. Student work is then reviewed by the industry practitioners and students are provided with feedback.
