Purpose of the Program



The program addresses skills shortages in the Health Care sector. The program will prepare you once graduating to successfully find employment nationally as an Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse. Global professional employment opportunities will depend on the individual country recognition of the Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse qualification. The diverse courses and clinical placements offered enable the you to seek employment in a variety of nursing disciplines.


Aims of the Program

The aim of this program is to provide you with education and training in line with the Enrolled-Division 2 nursing Entry to Practice Requirements, embracing the ANMC Code of Ethics and the ANMC National Competency Standards.

The national competency standards for the Enrolled-Division 2 nurse may be assessed to gain and retain a licence to practice as an Enrolled-Division 2 nursing in Australia, and to provide you with the professional values, underpinning knowledge and clinical skills to pursue further studies and successfully articulate into a Bachelor of Nursing Program.

A further aim of this program is to reflect the expanded scope of practice for Enrolled-Division 2 nursing in Victoria in the provision of patient centred care including the safe delivery of oral, topical, enteral, subcutaneous and intramuscular medication to a variety of clients in a range of health care facilities, as described within the Health Training Package HLT07. RMIT University will ensure that the training will equip  you with the skills and knowledge to foster a holistic approach to nursing in line with the standards of the ANMC competencies and AHPRA registration requirements.

Note: The term Enrolled-Division 2 nurse, as stated in the ANMC Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse entry to practice requirements, is equivalent to the AHPRA registration requirements. ANMC Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse Entry to Practice Requirements:

ANMC Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse at all times retains responsibility for his/her actions and remains accountable in providing delegated nursing care. An Enrolled-Division 2nurse is required to work under the direction and supervision of a Division 1 nurse. The Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse is a nurse who demonstrates competence in the provision of patient centred care which includes recognition of normal and abnormal ain assessment, intervention and evaluation of individual health and function status.

The Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse’s responsibilities also include the provision of support, comfort, assistance with activities of daily living to achieve optimal level of independence, and providing for emotional needs of individuals. Enrolled-Division 2 Nurses may administer medications by the topical, enteral, oral, intramuscular and subcutaneous route.

Enrolled-Division 2 Nurses are required to be information technology literate with specific skill in the application of health care technology. The Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse is required to demonstrate critical and reflective thinking skills in contributing to decision making which includes, reporting changes in health and functional status and individual responses to health care interventions.

Enrolled-Division 2 Nurses work as a part of the health care team to advocate for and facilitate the involvement of individuals, their families and significant others in planning and evaluating care and progress towards health outcomes. Need for the Diploma of Nursing   

The delivery of the Diploma of Nursing at RMIT University is a response to the nursing shortage resulting from a greater demand for nursing services, particularly in the aged care sector due to an increasing demand for aged care services as a result of people living longer and an increasing the number of people with dementia, cognitive and other function al disabilities.

Articulation and pathways

Articulation agreements between RMIT University programs enable you upon graduating from an RMIT University qualification to apply for advanced standing in a higher level qualification. The statement(s) below provide you with information about articulation agreements with this program.

If you are a graduate of C5246 Diploma of Nursing and you are applying for  (BPO32, BP035, or BP036) Bachelor of Nursing you may be able to claim credit for courses you have already completed. For the list of courses for which you may claim exemption and other details refer to the program guide for RMIT'S Bachelor of Nursing ( with URL links - in the RMIT Handbook ( http://www.rmit.edu.au/handbook).

You may be eligible for credit into other RMIT University programs for successfully completing this program upon application to other RMIT University programs. Please check with admissions officer of your program of choice.

The RMIT Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled-Divison 2 Nursing) qualification is a pathway into the Bachelor of Nursing Program and gains you a credit of 12 months of the Bachelor of Nursing Program.

Entrance requirements

There are no pre-requisite studies.

Educational history including ATAR and GPA will be considered.

Extra requirements:

VETASSESS Nursing Test: Applicants who do not have a Year 12 senior secondary certificate or equivalent, or a Certificate III or IV in a related field are required to sit a VETASSESS Nursing Test.  All other applicants who wish to supplement their academic record may choose to sit the VETASSESS test.

Applicants must fax their ‘Statement of Test Scores and Outcomes’  to 03 9925 4144.

Prior to undertaking clinical components of this course, students must provide at their own cost a clear (current year dated) National Police Records Check; a valid Working with Children check and evidence of adequate vaccination, including commencement of Hepatitis B vaccination and evidence of TB screening (see: www.health.vic.gov.au/immunisation/resources/health-care-workersguide.htm). Failure to provide the above documents may result in students being unable to complete this course.

English language requirements:

A minimum IELTS (Academic module) overall score of 6.0 with no band less than 5.5 or equivalent.

International students need to demonstrate an IELTS of 7 across all bands to be eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.

THe RMIT Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled-Division 2 nursing) is accredited by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) who provide operational support to the Nursing and Midwifery Board Of Australia ( NMBA ).

As a graduate of this program, you will be eligible for membership of Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Nursing and Midwifery Board Of Australia ( NMBA ). All graduates are required to apply to AHPRA for registration. The School of Life and Physical Science has strong connections to the nursing industry through its Program Advisory Committees, and have contributed to both the initial development and ongoing improvement of this program. Their involvement ensures that the program remains relevant to your needs as a graduate and the needs of graduate employers.

Many of the teaching staff within the program are practicing (or have been) industry professionals with extensive industry experience and contact networks. This experience, when integrated into teaching and learning practice, enriches your learning environment.

These networks are further enhanced by the school's Work Integrated Learning courses, which include 400 hours of supervised clinical placement in a broad range of nursing fields (aged care, rehabilitation, Mental health, community and acute care), and an elective - for example, Palliative Care.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
