Purpose of the Program

The Diploma of Alcohol & Other Drugs program provides the skills and knowledge required by workers who work under broad supervision and guidance to provide services to clients with alcohol and other drugs issues. These services can include counselling, referral and promotion services.  The program equips you with high level specialist knowledge, skills and competencies, especially in regard to laws affecting clients, the range of services available to them and health issues related to alcohol and drugs use and misuse.

Graduates of the program may be employed in a range of non-government, not-for profit or local government organisations, or the Department of Health and Human Services. They may work in a variety of services including day programs, residential rehabilitation services, specialist AOD services or detoxification services  in case management and often supervisory roles.

External accreditation and industry links

This is a nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification. RMIT works closely with major community services employers to meet the needs of people who seek to enter the community services workforce. Industry partners are active participants in the selection of electives, delivery and assessment tasks through membership of the Industry Advisory Committee.

The teaching staff within the program have extensive industry experience and maintain networks with industry partners.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
