Approach to learning and assessment

The Diploma of Vocational Education and Training is delivered intensively online over two semesters using Canvas, RMIT's Learning Management System. Interactive webinars, forum discussions, problem solving or research based activities will see students engage in a range of learning modes. Practical requirements and employability skills embedded in this program focus on enhancing students' teaching practice and work readiness.

Assessment occurs throughout the program. Evidence of competency for each unit is assessed via short answer knowledge questions and a work place based project.  Each project is designed to give  learners the opportunity to practically apply the skills and knowledge required to demonstrate the work skill, with the exact nature of the project determined by the critical aspects of evidence for each unit eg for TAEDES501 Design and develop learning strategies, learners develop two learning strategies and must implement one, while for TAEASS502 Design and develop assessment tools, learners develop 3 assessment tools which they then trial with a colleague or student and then review. Evidence can be collected online, in the workplace or in a simulated workplace. Please note, if you do not have access to a suitable practice environment in which to conduct workplace-based assessment projects, you should discuss your situation with the program coordinator as soon as possible.

Your facilitator will conduct weekly webinars in which you can raise questions or issues about your studies and assessment. You can also communicate via telephone, email or Skype.

If you have a long term medical condition or disability and/or other form of disadvantage it may be possible to negotiate variations to aspects of the learning or assessment methods.  You can contact the program coordinator or RMIT's Equitable Learning Services if you would like to find out more: see https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-and-facilities/student-support/equitable-learning-services

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;

and in addition:

  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

If you are working, particularly in a job which is related to your studies you will also be learning while at work and may have the opportunity to be assessed in your workplace for some or all of your courses. Feedback from work supervisors and others in the workplace can be used as evidence for assessment of competence, and an RMIT University assessor can visit your workplace to observe and assess your work practice and competence.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated.

The designated WIL course(s) for this program are:
