Purpose of the Program

It is a requirement for students to successfully complete all required courses prior to commencing their clinical placement experience.

In addition, students must successfully complete all courses and their clinical placement experience in order to proceed to the next semester of study. 

The program will prepare you, once graduated, to successfully find employment nationally as an Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse. Global professional employment opportunities will depend on the individual country recognition of the Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse qualification. The diverse courses and clinical placements offered enable the you to seek employment in a variety of nursing disciplines.

Aims of the Program

The aim of this program is to provide you with education and training in line with the Enrolled-Division 2 Nursing Entry to Practice Requirements, embracing the ANMAC Code of Ethics and the ANMAC National Competency Standards.

It is a requirement for students to successfully complete all required courses prior to commencing their clinical placement experience.
In addition, students must successfully complete all courses and their clinical placement experience in order to proceed to the next semester of study. 

The national competency standards for the Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse may be assessed to gain and retain a licence to practice as an Enrolled-Division 2 Nursing in Australia, and to provide you with the professional values, underpinning knowledge and clinical skills to pursue further studies and successfully articulate into a Bachelor of Nursing Program.

A further aim of this program is to reflect the expanded scope of practice for Enrolled-Division 2 Nursing in Victoria in the provision of patient centred care including the safe delivery of oral, topical, enteral, subcutaneous and intramuscular medication to a variety of clients in a range of health care facilities, as described within the Health Training Package HLT54115. RMIT University will ensure that the training will equip  you with the skills and knowledge to foster a holistic approach to nursing in line with the standards of the ANMC competencies and AHPRA registration requirements.

Note: The term Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse, as stated in the ANMaC Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse entry to practice requirements, is equivalent to the AHPRA registration requirements. ANMC Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse Entry to Practice Requirements:

ANMC Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse at all times retains responsibility for his/her actions and remains accountable in providing delegated nursing care. An Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse is required to work under the direction and supervision of a Division 1 Nurse. The Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse is a nurse who demonstrates competence in the provision of patient centred care which includes recognition of normal and abnormal pain assessment, intervention and evaluation of individual health and function status.

The Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse’s responsibilities also include the provision of support, comfort, assistance with activities of daily living to achieve optimal level of independence, and providing for emotional needs of individuals. Enrolled-Division 2 Nurses may administer medications by the topical, enteral, oral, intramuscular and subcutaneous route.

Enrolled-Division 2 Nurses are required to be information technology literate with specific skill in the application of health care technology. The Enrolled-Division 2 Nurse is required to demonstrate critical and reflective thinking skills in contributing to decision making which includes, reporting changes in health and functional status and individual responses to health care interventions.

Enrolled-Division 2 Nurses work as a part of the health care team to advocate for and facilitate the involvement of individuals, their families and significant others in planning and evaluating care and progress towards health outcomes. Need for the Diploma of Nursing   

The delivery of the Diploma of Nursing at RMIT University is a response to a nursing shortage. This is a result of a greater demand for nursing services, particularly in the aged care sector due to people living longer and an increasing in the number of people with dementia, cognitive and other functional disabilities.

Articulation and pathways

Articulation and pathways

Articulation agreements between RMIT University programs enable students graduating from an RMIT qualification to achieve advanced standing in and/or entry to a higher-level qualification. 

Pathways:

Graduates of the RMIT Certificate IV Tertiary Preparation (Science) program will be guaranteed entry to this program, subject to meeting the Diploma of Nursing English language proficiency specified by ANMAC and the NMBA. See English language requirements listed below.

Further study:

Graduates of the RMIT Diploma of Nursing within the last 10 years and who hold NMBA registration as an Enrolled Nurse are eligible for entry into the Bachelor of Nursing (BP032) with 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1-year full-time study). The remaining duration in the Bachelor of Nursing is 2 years for the February intake and 2.5 years for the July intake.

Entrance requirements

Entry requirements:

  • You must have successfully completed an Australian Year 12 senior secondary certificate of education, or an equivalent qualification.
    • If you have not completed an Australian Year 12 (or equivalent) qualification, you may choose to sit a Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) in order to be considered for this program. Applicants who wish to supplement their academic record may also choose to sit the STAT Multiple Choice. STAT Multiple Choice applicants must meet the eligibility requirements.
       
  • You must be at least 18 years of age by the commencement date of the program.

English language requirements:

The Registered Nurse Accreditation Standards require all applicants (international and domestic) to meet the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) English language skills registration standard prior to enrolling in the program. Applicants should refer to the NMBA website for further information.

Applicants whose primary language (as defined by the NMBA) is not English must provide evidence of English language proficiency by achieving the minimum English language test results as specified in the NMBA English language skills registration standard, e.g. a minimum IELTS (academic) overall score of 7.0 with a minimum score of 7.0 in each of the four components.

Prior to undertaking this course, students must provide at their own cost:

  • Working With Children Check: Students must hold a valid Working With Children Check prior to undertaking the clinical components of this course.
  • Police Check: Students must present evidence of a successful National Police Records Check prior to undertaking the clinical components of this course.
  • Immunisation Policy: Students must be adequately vaccinated prior to undertaking the clinical components of this course.

Failure to obtain satisfactory checks may result in students being unable to complete this program.

External accreditation and industry links

The RMIT Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled-Division 2 nursing) is accredited by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) who provide operational support to the Nursing and Midwifery Board Of Australia (NMBA).

As a graduate of this program, you will be eligible for registration with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Nursing and Midwifery Board Of Australia (NMBA). All graduates are required to apply to AHPRA for registration. You will need to meet all of  their requirements including English Language. Full details are available from their  website

The School of Vocational Engineering, Health and Sciences has strong connections to the nursing industry through its Industry Advisory Committees, and have contributed to both the initial development and ongoing improvement of this program. Their industry involvement ensures that the program remains relevant to your needs as a graduate and the needs of graduate employers.

Many of the teaching staff within the program are practising (or have been) industry professionals with extensive industry experience and contact networks. This experience, when integrated into teaching and learning practice, enriches your learning environment.

These networks are further enhanced by Work Integrated Learning (WIL) courses, which include 400 hours of supervised clinical placement in a broad range of nursing fields (aged care, rehabilitation, Mental health, community, sub- acute and acute care).

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
