Approach to learning and assessment

Your learning activities and assessments are designed to develop an understanding of the essential concepts that support retail design and visual merchandising skills. These gradually become more complex with the focus on integrated learning and a workplace approach to communication and presentation of ideas to clients.

The program uses a variety of learning and teaching methods.  These may include workshops,  simulated learning projects,  lectures, tutorials, seminars, case studies, problem-based learning, reflective techniques (e.g. blogs, journals), presentations, group-based learning, discussions and directed learning. The learning environment is a mix of face to face and online delivery.

The learning and assessment for this program will include both supervised and non-supervised forms of training delivery. Supervised training is teacher directed learning and assessment activities, this includes:

  • Structured online learning activities where there is real time access to your teachers e.g. online lectures, teacher led discussions and online activities.
  • Face-to-face learning e.g. tutorials, lectures, scheduled classes.
  • Assessment tasks.

You will also need to work independently (non-supervised), this includes:

  • Independent study activities such as research, reading, practical and/or theoretical practice tests or assessments

Assessment is formative and is ongoing. The minimum requirement is to prove competency in each course. Assessment includes project work, research, online quizzes and assignments, practical demonstration and observations in the classroom, and practical assignment submissions.

The program consists of two semesters over one year.

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;

and in addition:

  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Any or all of these aspects of a Work Integrated Learning (WIL) experience may be simulated.

The designated WIL course for this program is: SIRRMER010 Style using visual merchandising aids.

In this course you will work with an industry partner on a range of industry projects and tasks. This will occur in a simulated workplace over a number of weeks. Industry will provide guidance and feedback and you will document the experience.
