Approach to learning and assessment

This program teaches you the latest skills and knowledge in designing products. Most learning and assessment will be project-based, with activities simulating industry conditions and requirements.

The approach to learning and assessment for this program will include both supervised and non-supervised forms of training delivery.
Supervised training is teacher directed learning and assessment activities. This includes:

  • Structured online learning activities where there is real time access to your teachers e.g. online lectures, teacher led discussions and online activities.
  • Face-to-face learning e.g. tutorials, lectures, scheduled classes.
  • Assessment tasks.

You will also need to work independently, this includes:

  • Independent study activities such as research, reading, practical and/or theoretical practice tests or assessments.
  • Work placements which are not directly linked to an assessment of course competencies.

Design projects involve creative processes that combine hands-on production with the generation of ideas and concepts. These projects involve active industry, staff and student interaction and offer an opportunity for peer-to-peer learning in a supportive and flexible environment.

Year 1
Starting from a project brief, you learn various product development techniques and media. You'll work with the latest industry tools and practices to formulate solutions to design problems. You will be guided through the process of developing new consumer products (such as, toys or kitchenware) and in the process you will resolve practical, manufacturing and environmental issues.

Year 2
Using the skills and knowledge from year one you will undertake projects with greater complexity and range including electrical enclosures and mechanical products. You will research and analyse ideas in design and manufacturing while developing your skills and design communication.

You will be assessed predominantly through presentation of the portfolio of your work from the projects undertaken during the semesters of study. This can be digital and 3D in nature as well as in traditional formats. You will receive continual feedback on your work as you complete the projects and activities. This will include feedback from peers and staff as well as industry critiques of ideas and proposals.

Assessment for this program will be Competency-based.

If you have a long term medical condition and/or disability it may be possible to negotiate to vary aspects of the learning or assessment methods. You can contact the program coordinator or RMIT Equitable Learning Services team (ELS team) if you would like to find out more.https://www.rmit.edu.au/students/support-services/equitable-learning

Work integrated learning

RMIT University is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with workplace experience. As a student enrolled in this RMIT University program you will be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and
demonstrate vocational competency.

If you are working, particularly in a job which is related to your studies you will also be learning while at work and may have the opportunity to be assessed in your workplace for some or all of your courses. Feedback from work supervisors and others in the workplace
can be used as evidence of competency, and an RMIT University assessor can visit your workplace to observe your work practice and competence.

Any or all of these aspects of a WIL experience may be simulated.

The designated WIL course for this program is:

Develop a product range to meet market opportunities (VU22262)

In this course you will be asked to respond to external industry briefs and competitions with external critical review of your output.
