Approach to learning and assessment

To complete the requirements for the Diploma of Teacher Education Preparation you will be required to successfully complete 9 Core Units, 1 Education Practice Stream Unit and 2 Elective units.

Classes are timetabled over 3-4 days, including 1 day of workplacement and unsupervised directed study time. Your workplacement and unsupervised directed study are an integral part of your learning and assessment for the program. Classes are interactive and give you many opportunities to discuss, share ideas and practice new skills. You will participate in classes learning activities such as analysing case studies and scenarios, role plays, group and pair work, online research and reading articles. The work and tasks you complete during the program will focus on the teaching and learning of young people. 

Please note: if COVID-19 restrictions and the University’s guidelines require remote learning, the workshops will be delivered online via Collaborate Ultra on the Canvas Learning Management System. Your facilitator will provide instruction on how to use Collaborate.

Your assessments will be on-going through the program.

Assessment may include:

  •     question and answer written tasks
  •     oral tasks
  •     group work
  •     projects
  •     online tasks
  •     workbased assessment through demonstration and observation

Work integrated learning

RMIT is committed to providing you with an education that strongly links formal learning with professional or vocational practice. As a student enrolled in this RMIT program you will:

  • undertake and be assessed on structured activities that allow you to learn, apply and demonstrate your professional or vocational practice;
  • interact with industry and community when undertaking these activities;
  • complete these activities in real work contexts or situations;

and in addition:

  • these interactions and the work contexts provide distinctive sources of feedback to you to assist your learning.

Workplace is an important part of assessment for the program. Some of your Units require assessment to be completed the work placement; for example: CHCDIV002 Promote Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait islander cultural safety, CHCEDS019 Support Students Maths Learning, CHCEDS022 Work with students in need of additional support and CHCEDS020 Support Students Literacy Learning. 

You will participate in workplacement in a regulated educational organisation to gain on the job experience. You will be supported in organising your workplacement by the RMIT workplacement facilitator and relevant teachers. You will be required to complete relevant workplacement documentation e.g. Work Integrated Learning Agreements and Working With Childrens Check (WWCC) documentation before you commence your workplacement. Your workplacement facilitator and relevant teachers will assist you with the documentation at the commencement of the program.
