Top of pagePurpose of the Program
This National Training Package qualification provides you with the underpinning knowledge and practical skills required to safely and effectively perform the entry level roles and responsibilities of a dental technician. The apprenticeship program combines off-the-job training in the workplace.
Educators from RMIT liaise closely with workplace supervisors to facilitate training that meets your individual learning needs. Students participating in the full time program will be provided with a state art simulated workplace environment (RMIT Dental program is located in the Royal Melburne Dental Hospital) to gain experience in all aspects of Dental Technology.
Graduates are qualified to undertake technical work in denture construction, cast partial denture fabrication, orthodontics, and crown and bridge construction.

On successful completion of this program, graduates can apply for entry into the Advanced Diploma of Dental Prosthetics program.

To enrol in this program as an apprentice, you should:
- find employment as a dental technician
- meet with your employer and an Australian Apprenticeship Support Network Provider (Apprenticeship Network) to sign a training contract
- nominate RMIT as your preferred Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
You'll be contacted by us as soon as we are notified by the Apprenticeship Network.
School leavers and other Full time students
- In accordance with stated industry criteria, students should be able to demonstrate literacy and numeracy skills equivalent to successful completion of Year 12 VCE English and Year 11 VCE mathematics, or equivalent studies.
- Oral communication skills in the English language should be sufficient to ensure that the individual can accurately provide, interpret and respond to simple and routine instructions
- the ability to perform basic functions on a computer including accessing applications and inputting, retrieving and printing data.
Entry to this program is competitive. Applicants are ranked and selected in order of merit based on their academic achievement, e.g., ATAR, GPA or STAT Multiple Choice (including any adjustments).

The Diploma of Dental Technology is a nationally endorsed and recognised training program qualification that is supported and underpinned by a national health training package (HLT55118).
RMIT University and the School of Vocational Engineering, Health and Sciences through its Industry Advisory Committees consults with industry directly around all aspects of the program. RMIT has been at the forefront of Dental Technology training and education for over 40 years and has built up an extensive network of industry links.
All training is based in the Royal Dental Hospital of Melbourne through a long standing partnership with Dental Health Services Victoria to ensure wide exposure to the industry. As the dental hospital is a major hub for all dental training such as dental assistants/dental technicians/dental prosthetists (along with dentistry as part of Melbourne University training).

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees. Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.

Library resources and services
As a student enrolled in a program at RMIT University you can access the extensive services, facilities and study space provided by the Library. You can access books, journals and other course related materials, such as DVDs, past exams, newspapers and e-books. Through our document delivery service you can also request items from any library in the world.
Computers for study are available at every Library site, where you can access the Internet, myRMIT (www.rmit.edu.au/myrmit) or Library e-resources. If you have a laptop you can access the RMIT University wireless network in the Library. Library staff can show you how to find information for your assignments or you can work through web-based tutorials or use our online Ask a Librarian service.
The Library is continually expanding our electronic collections to make it easier for you to get the information you need when you need it. All RMIT University students have unlimited access to quality electronic resources such as, e-books, e-journals and newspapers.
