Purpose of the Program

This qualification enables those who are seeking a career in accounting to gain experience in accounting transactions, their behaviour and effects on the organisation. Graduates of this program typically secure work in range of industries as accounts payable officer, accounts receivable officer and some may pursue assistant accountant roles in larger accounting firms.  It also provides a study pathway to those who want to progress through higher level accounting qualifications Advanced Diploma of Accounting and higher education degrees in the accounting field.

This qualification includes one unit that constitutes an approved Tax Practitioner Board (TPB) course in Australian taxation law, and this unit may contribute towards meeting the academic requirements for registration as a Tax Agent. Those seeking registration as a Tax Agent should check current registration requirements with the TPB.

The underpinning and foundation skills that will be embedded within the Diploma program are as follows:

Articulation and pathways

The successful completion of the FNS50217 Diploma of Accounting (C5390)  qualification will enable you to gain entry into the FNS60217 Advanced Diploma of Accounting (C6163) program at RMIT.

At RMIT in the College of Business students are given the opportunity to continue their studies in one of the undergraduate degrees.  You will be eligible to receive advanced standing for approved courses.

Entrance requirements

Program Entry Requirements

Students wishing to undertake the Diploma of Accounting (FNS50217) must have completed one of the following:

  1. Completion of FNS40615 Certificate IV in Accounting or equivalent; OR
  2. Completion of FNS40215 Certificate IV Bookkeeping or equivalent; OR
  3. Completion of FNS40217 Certificate IV in Accounting and Bookkeeping or equivalent; OR
  4. Completion of the FNSSS00014 Accounting Principles Skill Set

External accreditation and industry links

The development of the program structure and the choice of elective units appropriate to the Accounting industry were informed by a Industry Advisory Committee (IAC) comprised of representatives of the Accounting sector and RMIT educators.

Academic staff maintain close contact with industry though various professional development activities.  Sessional staff generally maintains employment or operate their own business in the relevant industry.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
