Purpose of the Program

On successful completion of this program you will be prepared to work at senior technician and management levels in the live event and audiovisual related industries. You will be equipped to adapt to varied live production and broadcast industry environments and opportunities available locally and overseas. You are expected to understand the need for high production values and professionalism in order to participate in the entertainment, education, audiovisual installation and broadcast industries.

Articulation and pathways

Successful completion of the following programs guarantees entry into C5408 Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services:

  • C4416 Certificate IV in Screen and Media
  • C4422 Certificate IV in Screen and Media

Further Studies:

Successful completion of C5408 Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services guarantees entry to:

  • BP343 Bachelor of Business with up to 96 credit point of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study)
  • BP344 Bachelor of Business Professional Practice with up to 96 credit points of exemptions (equivalent to 1 year full-time study)

Entrance requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following entry requirements: 

Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Screen and Media 

OR 

Complete and submit the selection task 

NOTE: Applicants who have successfully completed the Certfiicate IV in Screen and Media are not required to complete the Selection Task.


SELECTION TASK

  1. Explain why you wish to study and learn about Live Production at RMIT. (Max 150 words) 
  2. Thinking about the Live Production industry, please explain why following occupational health and safety is everyone’s responsibility. (Max 150 words) 
  3. An entry requirement of this qualification is that you can demonstrate relevant experience in either lighting, screen and media, sound, staging or vision systems. What experience do you have in one or more of the areas listed above? (Perhaps you have worked in the technical crew for school performances or studied Media and gained this experience) (Max 150 words) 
  4. What trends have you seen that have occurred or could occur in live production? (Eg. What technical changes have occurred over the last few years with either lighting, sound or vision equipment?) (Max 150 words) 
  5. Using a numerical scale of 1 – 8, where 1 is most likely and 8 is least likely, indicate which job roles listed below are attainable after completion of the Diploma of Live Production and Technical Services program. 

(The question has been designed to gauge your understanding of job roles resulting from our program. Do not rank the job roles according to your preference of the job role) 

  • Studio operator in the television industry (eg. camera, lighting, sound, technical direction) 
  • AV technician for live production and events 
  • Film director 
  • Audiovisual support technician in a University or School

External accreditation and industry links

In Australia there are no professional bodies that recognise or accredit programs in Live Production and Technical Services, as the skills and knowledge are applied to a range of industries including but not limited to:

  • AV/IT technical support roles for education
  • Broadcast television – location and studio technical support roles
  • Venue- based live event and AV support roles
  • Live event equipment hire, staging and operational roles
  • Permanent AV systems design and installation roles
  • Theatrical and festival staging and technical operation roles
  • Video and film production technical support roles

This program is informed by and strongly connected with industry. It has been developed with the support and input of people working across the industry and all course delivery and assessment is informed by industry through the Industry Advisory Committee. The teachers in the Live Production and Technical Services program all have strong links with industry and histories of relevant industry experience.

Student expenses and charges in addition to fees

Once you are enrolled as a student in this program you will need to allow for expenses other than university tuition fees.  Additional expenses may relate to the purchase of lecture notes, textbooks, stationery, consumables such as printer paper, fees levied by commercial internet service providers for internet access outside of the university campus, and other relevant costs.
